that just shows you how clueless i am about the music business i guess!:p  producers discard the original melody and add new one all the time with no credit for songwriting?!?!?!? or do they give it to the team of songwriters to change it (i guess that happens a lot with today's pop stars, have no clue who's credited for those melodies?).
well, if somebody puts the melody together and the lyric songwriter gets all the credit that's just wrong imo. whatever happened in LB's case and with their entangled relationship i understand why he wouldn't take or get any credit, but other producers?!

In the case of Stevie & Lindsey -- I believe what they have both said is that it is Stevie's original melody and lyrics and then Lindsey works around that, putting all the other pieces together musically and probably removing the last oh 20 verses (lol) or so to make it into an actual song rather than just a poem with a melody. In the Tusk doc, I thought Lindsey was correcting her singing on her own melody and then she was covering for herself by telling him she had just rewrote it. LOL.
It is a gray area though, I agree. I used to think all the time that LB deserved credit on a lot of Stevie's stuff (if not almost all), but then again if she had the melody and the lyrics, he really was doing the producer's job - not necessarily playing the role of "co-writer". Also, I think a lot of this has changed in recent years with ghost writers, etc. If you can't write music I guess they "pair" you with someone who can, never mind your little three chord structure.
I can agree with bombaysaffires about "Frozen Love" - and this is why Stevie wanted Lindsey to have credit - she said he worked for over a year on the guitar solo until he had perfected it. Although, their collaborations on Stevie's material are so intertwined - I think it's why Christine described what they do as "writing songs together" and they got along very well when they were doing that - to me, that says a lot about their relationship professionally and even personally. They may disagree a lot, but it seems they hash it out until they come to a compromise and I would suspect are both happy with the end result - and probably proud of it. In the DR doc, he says he's thinking of cutting the guitar solo in a song - and before he can even finish she says "in half" and then she agrees. They've been doing that sort of thing for so many years and probably trust each each others judgement more than anyone. It doesn't mean they always agree, but when they do sometimes it is "magic". They complement (especially then) their strengths and weaknesses. I mean "Rhiannon" is a beautiful song Stevie wrote, but it became a rock anthem when Lindsey wrote the opening riff. And, Lindsey has referred to "Gypsy" as their greatest collaboration, but he is not credited as a "co-writer", he obviously looks at his involvement strictly as a producer. But, then on their most recent effort, "Soldier's Angel" which Stevie praised him glowingly for - he is not even credited as producer. I guess in a lot of ways they still see each other as a "package deal" musically.
