Lindsey's ANTI-LOVE songs

In a different thread, of which I can't recall with the sudden influx of interesting threads/polls on LB's forum, I proposed a list of anti-love songs. You know, the kind of songs that have a sort of cynical/guarded look at love. Or maybe it's angry and accusatory. Or all of the above.

Lindsey is a tough songwriter to generalize. He has a ton of different these going in his songs, and I was stumped coming up with a solid list. But perhaps you can help! Yep, I'd love it to be a future poll. And why not? We can never have enough of those! ;)

Here's what I made so far:

Quote:

What Makes You Think You're The One
That's Enough For Me (could be interpreted both ways)
I Must Go
Go Your Own Way
Never Going Back Again
Not That Funny
On The Wrong Side

This is a discussion...so you all can agree and share why or rip me apart for misinterpreting lyrics. I don't care, this is all in fun!

What Makes You Think You're The One

Read these lyrics and tell me how happily in love he sounds:

Quote:

What makes you think you're the one
Who can laugh without cryin'?
What makes you think you're the one
Who can live without dyin'?
Every little bit
Is there
To see
Every little bit
Of you
And me

What makes you think I'm the one
Who'll be there when you're callin'?
What makes you think I'm the one
Who will catch you when you're fallin'?
Every little bit
Is there
To see
Every little bit
Of you
And me

What makes you think I'm the one
Who will love you forever?
Everything you do has been done
And this won't last forever
Every little bit
Is there
To see
Every little bit
Of you
And me
Now, whomever this song was written for (*cough*STEVIE*cough*) you can sort of tell the singer is p1ssed about something. Jealous, perhaps. Frustrated, for sure.

And then when you listen to the actual song and hear the anger and passion in his vocals...man, LB poured himself into this recording and it was REAL pain coming out.

Yep, I'm going for live:

that song is really at its angriest live - and those Tusk rehearsal vids are just so great! :xoxo: :blob2:

let's see, what else...

Big Love - according to LB's description of it ("looking out for love=guarding against love")

Nico 02-20-2012 01:11 AM

"Big Love" would be exceptionally well-placed in this list!

elle 02-20-2012 01:28 AM

The Ledge?

would The Ledge count as anti-love? or just an angry song directed at ex-lover?

Countin' on my fingers
Countin' on my toes
Slippin' thru your fingers
Watchin' how it grows
You can love me baby but you can't walk out
Someone oughta tell you what it's really all about
Do you ever wonder
Do you ever hate
Six feet under
Someone who can wait
You can love me baby but you can't walk out
Someone oughta tell you
Oughta tell you what it's really all about
You're never gonna make it baby
Oohh you're never gonna make it baby
Oohh you're never gonna
Make it babe
Make it babe
Make it baby

Countin' on my fingers
Countin' on my toes
Slippin' thru the ringer
Watchin' how it goes
You can love me baby but you can't walk out
Someone oughta tell you what it's really all about
Buy another fixture
Tell another lie
Paint another picture
See who's surprised
You can love me baby but you can't walk out
Someone oughta
Someone oughta tell you what it's really all about
You're never gonna make it baby
Oohh you're never gonna make it baby
Oohh you're never gonna
Make it babe
Make it babe
Make it baby

You can love me baby but you can't walk out
You can love me baby but you can't walk out
You can love me baby but you can't walk out

Someone oughta someone oughta
Someone oughta someone oughta
Someone oughta someone oughta
Someone oughta someone oughta

You can love me baby but you can't walk out
Someone oughta tell you
Oughta tell you what it's really all about

and Nico - what is your reasoning behind On the wrong side being anti-love song?

I must be going
Kiss me goodbye
All the colors are changing
There's a tear in my eye
Hearts filled with passion
Eyes without sight
Oh, we never went runnin'
On the wrong side
All the faces of liars
And the faces of glass
Oh, they walked by the window
But they never got past
Action for action
Fight for fight
Oh, we never went runnin'
On the wrong side
On the wrong side
On the wrong side
We never went runnin'
On the wrong side
I must be going
Kiss me goodbye
All the colors are changing
There's a tear in my eye
And I'll go on living
All the rest of my life
And I'll never go runnin'
On the wrong side
On the wrong side
On the wrong side
I'll never go runnin'
On the wrong side
I'll never go runnin'
On the wrong side
I'll never go runnin'
On the wrong side

"The Ledge" would be perfect elle! Thanks for that one!

Ok, for "On The Wrong Side" I always thought the singer was saying he had to break it off because the love wasn't fulfilling him in what he wanted. When he sings, "we never went running/ on the wrong side" it could mean that the love was 'perfect' in a very boring/predictable and unchallenging way. And he needed to end it because it no longer gave him that passion he initially felt.

So maybe not completely ANTI-LOVE, but I like that it has sort of a loving bitterness. For me anyway.

I guess maybe these lines:

Quote:

Hearts filled with passion
Eyes without sight
Oh, we never went runnin'
On the wrong side
What they originally thought they had (passion) wasn't there and they never took it where it could have gone.

Dang, I may be over-analyzing but thems are my thoughts. ;)

ok. guess i can go with that but then we go into a really gray territory and it's hard to figure out when to stop maybe?

maybe someone else chimes in. i'm fine either way - with it being counted or not.

but then "Can't go back" might also need to be counted? it's one step removed from NGBA but...

elle 02-20-2012 01:50 AM

you know, i'm looking at this list of songs and have to say - it's going to be really hard for me to decide between these... so many on there that i just LOVE!!

and then there's the juggernaut - GYOW. which i cannot but love so much, and then even more and especially because of what it becomes at LB's shows :xoxo:! but i hope it doesn't win this poll b/c it would just be unfair fight! or maybe 2 songs with the most votes from the poll can be taken in the next round? or maybe we can get to vote for 2 favorite songs in this poll?

What Makes You Think You're The One
That's Enough For Me
I Must Go
Go Your Own Way
Never Going Back Again
Not That Funny
On The Wrong Side
Big Love
The Ledge
Can't Go Back (maybe)

what about Bang The Drum? it talks about ending the love and mocks another person about her reasons for ending it...

Nico 02-20-2012 02:46 AM

Why not re: "Bang The Drum."

Oohhhh...I almost want to remove GYOW because of how obviously it may dominate. But that's not up to me, and it probably isn't fair.

Chiming in on my namesake... :blob2::D

LB says about Go Insane in general: "There is an atmosphere about this record I haven't acheived before", says Buckingham, "probably because much of my previous work drew from the emotion of anger, while this album seems to reflect feelings of disappointment and understanding."

Going by that and the mournful organ sound of Bang The Drum, I don't think it's an anti-love song so much as a regret/disappointment song that the love didn't work out. I Must Go is definitely anti-love though!

I quite like that you brought up the album's atmosphere- I love that about GI!

Yes, I agree about "I Must Go."
