Jessie Baylin covers Storms; free download.
Jessie Baylin is a musician/singer I came across a few years back in Denver, opening for James Morrison. She became a fast favorite of mine - she has a beautiful and unique voice and writes great songs. Her first album You was an independent release and is no longer available, but many of those songs were re-recorded and included on her first release with a major label, Firesight.

However, last week Jessie recorded Pleasure Center, a 5-track EP, at home in her living room and has distributed it for free via soundcloud.com. Four of the five tracks are covers and one, White Noise, is her own composition. One of the songs she covered is Stevie's Storms, and I wanted to share it with you here. I hope this post doesn't come off as a shameless promotion of Jessie's music, but that's pretty much what it is. The way the music industry craps on artists these days - especially the singer/songwriter - gives me (and all of us) cause to get the word out about the artists we love in any way we can. If you like Jessie's cover of Storms, you may very well enjoy her other material. She is an artist I believe very much in, and I hope you might like her, too. You can also see her December 6th at The Mercury Lounge in NYC. So I think vocally she does a pretty good job. I wish I could sing Storms and have it sound this good. If this had been professionally recorded and produced I think it would have made a significant difference. I mean, the singing itself is surprisingly on point. She actually sings in the right octave and and has a very melodic tone to her voice which is very fitting for this song. Storms would not be my first pick to cover of a Stevie song because I think if people had never heard the original and this was their first time hearing it it could sound quite boring which it's totally not. |
