Stevie reveals why Las Vegas isn't an option for her

This weekend, Stevie Nicks continues her lengthy tour in support of her current album, In Your Dreams, with a string of dates in Australia. The trek kicks off Saturday in Melbourne, and she'll wrap things up December 10 in Tasmania. For this round of dates, Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, who co-produced In Your Dreams, will be joining Stevie, and she says she's had so much fun working with him that she'd love him to be involved in the next Fleetwood Mac album as well.

"[Dave's] one of those people that walks in the room and he doesn't even have to say anything and you start laughing," Stevie tells ABC News Radio. "He's just instantly funny. And, he gets up every day and he looks at the world through the eyes of a child. And, it rubs off on you and you feel like a child. And, he has big dreams and he shoots for the stars...you start to become like that when you're around him, and that's where I want to be."

Someplace Stevie doesn't want to be, however, is in Las Vegas, doing a permanent residency, like Elton John, Celine Dion or her pal Rod Stewart, with whom she toured earlier this year. Though she's now in her sixties, Stevie isn't interested in giving up her nomadic existence, staying in one place and letting the fans come to her. "I could never do that. Never. I could never stay in one place like that," she tells ABC News Radio. "I think that for somebody like Rod Stewart, who has eight children and a brand-new baby, I think that this is fantastic. Celine Dion, you know, she wanted to raise her babies and not be traveling all over the world."

Stevie notes that her situation is vastly different from that of Rod, Celine or even Elton -- she's not married and she's not a parent. "I don't have that. I have a dog," she notes. "So I would never be able to stay in the one place and be in the same dressing room every night and have the same audience. I couldn't do it."

It wouldn't be the same audience every night, dummy.

I read that differently. In Stevie venacular, she's expressing that it's the same audience, because it will always be the same venue, with the same mix of fans and casino patrons.

And quite frankly, I don't think she has the large universal appeal that would sustain itself, given the typical consumer population that is attracted to that enviroment.

Elton, Celine and Rod are in a different realm.

Yes, you are so right. A Vegas audience is a Vegas audience for the most part...night after night. And I'm not sure she could sustain that night after night for an extended run.

I think Cher had some line about how she was initially horrified at how old her audiences were in Vegas. Then she realized it might be the last concert any of these people would ever go to, and she'd better give it her all.
I don't think Vegas would be a very stimulating place for Stevie.

Yeah the realm of suck :sorry: they have a couple good songs but they are more on the campy/gaudy side of rock; perfect for Vegas

For sure, but Elton John (and lyricist Bernie Taupin) is a legend to me-- I've been a huge fan since the mid seventies, and he's had more than a couple of good songs! Celine isn't my cup of tea, and I'm somewhat indifferent to Rod.

As much of a legend as she is, I don't think she's got the pull for a long term residency in the same way that Celine, Elton and Cher have. She's done well playing there for three nights or so before but I think that would be about it, maybe a couple more dates spread out over a week or two week period.

Hahahahaha this made me laugh- true, though, in my opinion!

Macfanforever 11-25-2011 12:00 AM

I think she will get bored at the same venue night after night.

mitzo 11-25-2011 07:07 AM

It would be hard on her voice to be stuck doing shows virtually every night like that.

Macfanforever 11-25-2011 10:10 AM

I agree about the stress on her voice.I know some of my country music faves settled down in Branson Missouri .Thats to far out in the boonies for Stevie.
