Wow that was really cool...never seen that before! I have to say though that the Mac and all their coolness seem a little above that setting. And please tell me I was not the only one annoyed by all the cut aways to the people at the dance or whatever...kind of annoying. I want my Fleetwood Mac!

Anyways how smoking' was Lindsey in this video...he totally looked like he was not into the song though. In fact, at the very end he wasn't even trying to lip synch:laugh:. Stevie looked so cool here...couldn't keep her eyes off Lindsey I could see;). Christine was awesome as usual. Mick kind of looked like he didn't want to be there. And was John really wearing a suit onstage:shocked:. Either way he looked handsome! OK so that was really cool...totally enjoyed it! Thanks for posting:wavey:

I noticed Stevie was intently watching Lindsey:cool: Mick sure did have a, "Boardie Ordie Dude" look to him.

I missed this one too- I love browsing youtube late at night and finding a really cool video or some new music! :blob1: I'm often surprised by how much is out there, and the wealth of FM-related material!

That was a bit awkward. Were most performances on TOTP like that? Why did they do Oh Diane? Why have I never heard of this? Why is Lindsey so bad at lip syncing? It's like Stop Draggin' My Heart Around all over again. So many questions!

Sanne2 09-14-2011 03:56 AM

When was this filmed? Wasn't Oh Diane the last single off Mirage? Was it after the tour was over?
Even more questions!

Thanks for the video!...though I believe this is the worst song from the Rumours line up of Fleetwood Mac...Never could get into it at all...

Every performance I've seen from TOTP (even later stuff) has been lip synching (usually poorly) to the studio track.

Oh Diane was single only in European markets. It's a short, simplistic song that apparently held an appeal outside of the US.

That TV appearance is strange for various reasons. Fleetwood Mac prefers to play live in appearances. They are not comfortable (or good at) faking it. Also, Oh Diane was not a song they ever performed live, and Stevie's contributions to the song were limited, if not completely absent.

On that particular show, lip-synching was the norm, not a choice. Hence the very awkward "performance."

Whilst this youtube is take from a TOTP broadcast the bands performance itself was not recorded in the BBC TOTP studio. Hence the breakaway shot to the dancers. If the band were actually at TOTP they'd be in that studio with the dancers around them.

I seem to remember seeing this or another lip-synced TV performance of this tune on that BBC Fleetwood Mac at 21 documentary from 1988.

I would guess this was filmed in either Europe or the US and then the BBC brought this in to show on TOTP as the band weren'r available or didnt want to go on the TOTP show.

Mick says something in his book about how he and Lindsey had semi-tense discussions about the direction of the music on Mirage. Mick wanted a return to Rumours whereas Lindsey wanted to pursue a knd of 50s-style Eddie Cochran (sp?) thing. Ironically, Lindsey's musical direction provided the band with the only sizable UK hit on Mirage. "Oh Diane" went to #9. "Gypsy" went to #46 and--oddly--"Hold Me" didn't even chart.

In some later performances, TOTP had the artists singing but the instrumental was pre-recorded.

Interesting, I don't think I've ever seen this. There's also the badly lip-synched performance of "Freedom" from 1990, but that was some Japanese show, not TOTP (however Stevie did do "Rooms On Fire" for TOTP. Also bad).

WAYYYYY back in the day...(82) pretty sure i remember reading various places that Oh Diane did so well in the UK was because of the love for the fairly new Princess that was on the scene... Diana anyone??? for all the young'uns on here go google her.... Princess Diana... lol
