Sisters of the Moon Performance/Robin Anderson

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I was just watching Stevie's performance of "Sisters of the Moon" from the Mirage DVD and I'm always touched by how out of control she gets at the end and when she's bent over crying and Lindsey lays his head on her....Lordy, I lose it. So, I'm wondering....I've heard this was filmed on October 22, 1982 and Robin passed on October 12th. Are these dates correct? Is this where some of this emotion originates? Just curious.

From my research you are correct: Robin passed away on October 12, 1982, On October 21st & 22nd, 1982 Fleetwood Mac's "In Concert - Mirage Tour '82" was filmed at The Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California. Stevie seems both angry and sad in this video. I love this performance!

mikebise 08-25-2011 03:41 PM

Yes, the video was filmed October 21 & 22, 1982 at the L.A. Forum. Both nights were spliced together for the video, thus Stevie's different hair styles/outfits during the same song, like "You Make Lovin' Fun", "Blue Letter", and even "Sisters Of The Moon" is the 2 performances spliced together by Marty Callner.

I definitely think Stevie's grief plays into the whole show, especially "Gypsy", "Rhiannon" and "Sisters Of The Moon". I can only imagine what "Sara", "Dreams" and "Landslide" would look like on video.

I was in Austin for the final Mirage concert on Halloween 1982, also being the final public performance of "Sisters Of The Moon" as well. Stevie seemed spirited at the beginning on "Second Hand News" when she came out wearing the most giant witch's hat (and telling us, "Rhiannon wishes you a Happy Halloween!")!!! But mostly she seemed very, very dark and sad, only a few weeks after Robin's death. "Sara" had to be re-started in Austin because Stevie was crying at the beginning. "Gypsy" she seemed to be crying on as well.

"Sisters Of The Moon" was, if you can believe it, even wilder than the video... the final performance.

Mike, I was at the Austin show - that was my first FM concert. I definitely remember the witch's hat, but not the other tidbits and factoids. I do remember the intensity of SOTM - that made me a fan for life. Thanks! :xoxo:

i gotta say, that performance on the Mirage HBO special is just amaze-balls. the idea of getting to see her do that song during that tour??? i'm jealous!

also, i'm sure you guys have all seen this perfomance of Gold Dust Woman (i just found it earlier this morning), but it's right up there with that SOTM performance from '82. what i love is just that performance aspect. she's a true showman, a brilliant performer along with being a brilliant writer!

It was a memorable performance .Being in the audience I can remember when she got to the climax of the song before the big guitar solo they turned two huge super trouper lights on the audience and everyone went wild.

I didn't realize the Mirage concert filming and Robin's passing were so close together. I'm not too keen on "Gypsy," from that show, but SOTM and "Rhiannon" are spectacular. I always get chills on the "you don't change and I don't change" part.

And I've always loved that performance of GDW. Ole Mick is really eye f*cking her, too.

THe piano demo of SOTM has always been my very favorite version. Does anyone have a file of this they would be willing to share?

Ah, one of my favorite performances ever (along with Gold and Braid from her HBO concert). She blows me away with her passion and emotion during this song. I love when she's back-lit in blue, facing Mick and her hair is just wild and frizzed up and '80s and spectacular.

I also never knew how close Robin's death and this performance were. I was recently cleaning and found a reproduced watercolor painting nestled in it's packaging at the bottom of a drawer. I ordered this in 2002- I have no recollection of this, which is typical for that time. LOL.

The description card that came with it says it's a painting by Debby Faulkner-Stevens and it was sold to raise money for the Robin Anderson Memorial Fund at the City of Hope, and that Stevie gave permission to use her lyrics from "Sisters of the Moon".

Going to buy a frame for it this weekend. :)

Yet another great performance. She's the real deal, no doubt. My favorite part is when she goes for the tambourine. Work it, mama!

And it has to be said how great her booty looks in that skirt.

My favorite "Sisters of the Moon" on the '82 tour was the one at Irvine Meadows October 18. I kinda wish that concert was the one filmed. But all the '82 performances are really good (although I think the band played it better in 1980), including the US Festival, Memphis, Denver, Detroit, Cedar Falls, Oakland, etc. They all have a lot of Nicks passion, & they all sound generally alike.

People here are always stupidly ragging on the critics. But the critics, in those days, often praised Fleetwood Mac, & held them up as exemplars of great pop music & superb performances. The Irvine Meadows City of Hope benefit I just mentioned was named by Robert Hilburn of the L.A. Times the "best rock concert in Orange County for 1982." And the Rolling Stone critics, in their year-end critics' poll, named the song "Tusk" the best single of 1979 (as opposed to the readers' poll, which didn't mention Fleetwood Mac at all).

All the press clippings/reviews I have (dozens) from 1982 rag on Stevie and call her the worst thing ever.

Kinda funny isn't it? She was getting slammed back then yet us many of us ledgies feel these performances were some of her best. The whole Robin episode has always fascinated me, maybe it's because she passed away on my birthday.
