MacShadowsBall's "Lucy" Thread

So as some of you know, I'm a big I Love Lucy and in general a Lucille Ball fan. She was an excellent comedienne and often referred to as the Queen of Comedy. She along with her husband, bandleader-turned-producer Desi Arnaz created the groundbreaking I Love Lucy television series in 1951, which laid down the basic foundation for what the television sitcom would be for decades to come.

Much like Fleetwood Mac and the Rumours album, Lucille Ball is known for much more that just the I Love Lucy show. She starred in several movies before and after her "Lucy" fame, along with 2 more TV sitcoms until 1974!

So I thought each week or so I would share some of my favorite Lucille Ball works of art!

2nd Season of I Love Lucy - "Lucy Goes to the Hospital" ; January 19th, 1953
The baby is due any minute and to help calm Ricky's nerves, everyone smoothly rehearses the moment when Lucy will have to go to the hospital.

When I was 10 years old, I had major spinal surgery that kept me in the hospital for over a month. I remember watching I Love Lucy reruns every evening at 5pm. She was awesome!

Yeah I was around 9-10 years old when I first discovered I Love Lucy. I remember watching it with my grandfather every night at 8pm on the old Nick@Nite.

No, but it looks like a good movie. I didn't know that she and Henry Fonda starred in two movies!

I did the same thing with my Mom. We watched the Brady Bunch and I Love Lucy on every night after my younger siblings went to sleep. This seemed very grown-up to me--a grand privilege for having reached the mature age of 9.

This would have been the late 90's, and from what I understand, Nick@Nite has since shifted to shows from the 90's/00's. Needlessly, I think: the comedy of I Love Lucy has help up astoundingly well.

Yeah Nick@Nite now is all shows from the 90' and 200o's. Most of the older shows on Nick@Nite in the 90's got mirgrated over to TVLand, but many now have since disappeared. :(

Here's another one...

February 9th, 1959 episode of the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.

Lucy and the gang are up in Alaska, one day before their hotel rooms are ready and so they are all sharing a room!

I need to sit down one of these days and watch some episodes of I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, and Here's Lucy. The first two are the only ones I've really seen much of. Lucy was a great comic actress, but the older she got, the less funny I found her slapstick humor to be. I've seen an episode or two of her last show, Life with Lucy, from the mid-'80s...to paraphrase a review I read, a 75-year old woman falling off a ladder just isn't funny. And she was terribly miscast in Mame. But in her prime, she was great.

Even for me for some reason, I Love Lucy is funnier that her later shows, The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy. After Vivian Vance left mid-way through The Lucy Show, it was basically just Lucy by herself. True Gale Gordon was there with his brand of comedy/laughter, but Lucy needed another "Ethel".

Ahhhh the good old days! I loved Nick@Nite. Now...not so much. I like George Lopez and The Nanny, and that's about it.

I remember watching I Love Lucy and The Brady Bunch with my family t00. I still love Lucy but the Brady Bunch has lost its charm.
