Least Favorite Stevie song from Mirage
Gypsy, Straight Back, That's Alright - pick your least favorite...
Poll closes in 4 days. |
Straight Back, just because Gypsy and That's Alright are two of my all-time favorites from SN.
|
That's Alright. I'm no fan of country & the Mac colliding. :distress:
|
I absolutely love all three of these songs so I cannot vote in this poll.
|
^^^Agreed. Stevie's songs saved this album for me. I loved all of her songs and disliked a lot of Christine and Lindsey's songs.

Gypsy is one of my all time favs.
Plumped for Straight Back even though I like both the other two. |
Prediction: Gypsy will be the only song on Mirage that does not get a single vote. As it should be.
Straight Back got my vote. There are some cool lyrics in there, but I just really like the other two more. For those who dislike That's Alright - I totally understand. But I love the demo, and that love carries over to the album version. Anyone remember the contest from a few years ago? Brian (LB5) ran it. Mikki did an AMAZING version of TA that I actually have on my iPod because I loved it so much. Would make Stevie proud... |
That's Alright is one of my very favorite Stevie songs. My best of Stevie disc includes Gypsy as well.
So Straight Back, hands down. |
Yup, I did it, I voted "Gypsy". :) All three songs are great lyrically (and far better than anything else on Mirage), but for me "Gypsy" loses based on the vocal & (over)production. There's nothing wrong with Stevie's voice on it, but I don't think the production lets her voice shine as much as it should. Her voice takes a back seat to the guitar for several notes, for example. The other two songs keep a more pronounced emphasis on Stevie's voice, which was stellar in 1982. (One of the Stevie/Heartbreakers "Gypsy" outtakes also manages this task, which is to be expected since it was recorded for her solo work, where naturally the focus would be on Stevie alone.) I like "Gypsy", I just think that it's a bit overrated (especially live, not that live has anything to do with this poll). Much of the magic I associate with hearing the song comes more from remembering the great video when I listen.

Like Viv, I can't vote on this poll. All three songs are incredibly potent, and I love them all. On Mirage, Stevie remains as consistent as she'd been on the previous three albums.
Too bad she fell from grace, in a rather spectacular fashion, on Tango. |

Never got all the hoopla over Straight Back. It's certainly not bad, just the least interesting - probably the most forgettable of all SN's Mac songs. I do like that CM is so prominent on it. It's the closest thing we ever got to a Stevie/Christine duet. :(
Anyone who thinks Gypsy is "over-produced" has tin ears. |
Easy....Straight Back. Almost always skip it. I'm in the camp that loves Stevie with a country-tinged song, so That's Alright ranks very high for me. Which is probably why I also highly-rate After The Glitter Fades and For What Its Worth.
I actually think that the younger Stevie was meant for rockin, but the older Stevie is meant for crooning. And I mean that in the very best sense. As we get older, our views and observations on life take a more wistful turn. As I say, you can't be on the "Edge of 17" your entire life. |
Well, all three of these are in my top of the top when it comes to Stevie's songs. I voted with the majority.
