Stevie is the only one? She deserves some props!

Correct me if I'm wrong but she is the only female artist of any genre that has had success as a solo artist and being a member of a band at the same time.

The only male singer I can think of having almost the same success or maybe more is Phil Collins!

So Stevie totally belongs in the 'R&R Hall of Fame' as a solo artist as well! ;)

Totally agree, she should be in the R&R Hall of Fame. BTW, I'm from WA too :wavey:

mylittledemon 05-14-2011 04:06 AM

What about Gwen Stefani? She's never left No Doubt... And Don Henley had huge success outside of The Eagles...

Silver Springs 05-14-2011 04:33 AM

What about Debbie Harry? Linda Perry? Annie Lennox?

None of them as successful though!

Well, Stevie was the only female in the 80s to have a number 1 solo album with a group (Mirage) and solo (Bella Donna). Gwen really hasn't been as succesful as Stevie the US and has never really outputted a lot of solo material but she is the only one I can think to have a dual career sorta like Stevies. She is more succesful overseas than Stevie though. Gwen seems to making a nosedive out of popularity.

I honestly think that Stevie's success as a solo artist may have prompted Don Henley to do the same. Debbie Harry's solo career was only successful overseas. She had one gold album in the U.S. but no real hits. I did like French Kissing in the US. She lasted a little longer in the UK.

Stevie career has been quite unique when it comes dual career in rock music, especially in terms of output.

Are you basing success on sales? What I think is true success is that these artists have been allowed to continue making music.

No Doubt allowed Stefani to make 2 or 3 solo albums, that I believe have sold millions of copies. And No Doubt it still together.

Henley did the same thing... They were both in bands and had solo careers. That's the comparison... Stevie isnt the only ones who's done it. It doesnt matter that Stevie may have had pushed more records.

No, basically I'm saying Stevie (in the last 30 years) has gone from FM/Solo/FM/Solo and so on. Don Henley was in the Eagles & went solo for years until the Eagles reunited in 1994.

Debbie Harry was in Blondie first until they broke up and she released 4 solo albums and Blondie got back together in 1998 and sinse then she's done a solo album and a Blondie one.

Annie Lennex went solo for awhile but got back together with Dave.

Gwen went solo for a few albums as well.

See where I'm going!

Like Stevie, Phil Collins went from Genesis/solo/Genesis/solo....

That's what I mean with Stevie! ;)

Gwens 1st solo album sold a lot over 3 million, based off the single Hollaback Girl and it did really well overseas. She put out another album based off leftover material and it sold half as much. No Doubt has been in hiatus forever. It wasn't like she had to fit albums in. No Doubt is finally in the studio. Gwens solo career is nowhere as near prolific as Stevie's . By the time Stevie was 40 she had 4 solo albums, plus 5 albums with new material from the mac. Gwen also had a baby and got married. Her solo career has been filled with a lot of bubble gum singles too.

I would not actually consider Annie Lennox as having a dual career since Eurythmics basically quit recording.

Stevie went solo about the same time as Phil and Bella was more successul. Don Henley followed suit later.

Thanks, I now have that Gwen song stuck in my head!:lol::lol:

I think she's certainly the only female who's managed to go Band-Solo-Band-Solo-Band and still had incredible success.

Gwen Stefani had 2 successful solo albums; but No Doubt had broken up, now that No Doubt are back together, she's axed her solo career. Debbie Harry - apart from the fantastic Necessary Evil and her first Solo album - has only made her Solo albums while Blondie have been broken up.

If Destiny's Child got back together, you could say Beyoncé has done it as well, but then again, Destiny's Child basically WAS Beyoncé.

That's basically what I was saying but you worded it alot better!:lol:

Annie Lennox not successful? I beg to differ. Not a week goes by without me hearing of her gaining a new award for either her music or humanitarian work. Off the top of my head she's won two BRIT Awards for solo work (discounting the many she received with Eurythmics), An Academy Award, Won three Grammy Awards (nominated for several too), Two Ivor Novello awards, Several Ascap awards, A Golden Globe and recieved several honourary Degrees for her work in England. Her album Medusa also went triple platinum. How is that not successful? Or is it that success in Great Britain just doesn't cut the mustard?

TerraRhiannon 05-14-2011 11:13 AM

Eric Clapton anyone? He was in Cream & then very successful as a solo artist
