Let me start by saying that I am in love with the entire IYD album... That is --- EXCEPT for the addition of My Heart.

I was very excited to go to Barnes & Noble and purchase the album with the extra track, but upon listening to it at home, I feel as if My Heart ruins the flow. I also was a fan of the original version from the TISL era that we all knew, but I am not a huge fan at all of this newer version.

It's difficult to explain why, but this is the best I can do: It's like when I'm inside a Chick Fil-a, and I'm struggling to hear a song being played over the loudspeakers above general the din of the restaurant, and it's a song I think I might like. Then all of the sudden I hear words like "salvation" and "praise" pop out of the song, and I realize that what I'm listening to is christian rock. That's what my heart sounds like to me (the music, obviously, not necessarily the lyrics, although they could easily work also for a retreat at a mid-western mega-church...)

It's nothing I have against Christianity or any religion, it's only that was just my initial feeling about the song, which kind of ruined it for me on IYD. Both the sound of it as well as the themes are off from the rest of the album IMO. So I don't mean to offend anyone who is religious or who may have a predilection for christian rock.

BTW, for those who may not know Chick Fil-a: delicious chicken sandwiches and waffle fries served at a privately owned fast food chain. They are a Christian company and aren't afraid to let you know it, thus the christian rock played constantly inside their restaurants with which I am associating My Heart.

 That was great. I was in the car with a friend the other day, and some song by Lifehouse came on the radio and she asked me why I was listening to Christian rock.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. I'm not saying I don't patronize them. I'm saying I probably eat there wayyyyy to frequently. That's how I'm so knowledgeable about their musical selection, and that's why that connection with their music and My Heart was the first thing I thought of when I heard the song!

They're "christian" in the right-wing, we're-going-to-discrimate-against-minorities version of the term. I won't eat at Chick-Fil-A because they are horrendously anti-gay.

I love Lifehouse, and they aren't really a Christian band. I've read interviews with the lead singer, where he says that he is a Christian, as are several of the other members, but they never set out to do "Christian rock."

They are not antigay. They are pro-marriage. Look up the specifics. Target got in similar hot water for a identical problem. Big companies give money to charities they like. Some of those charities do things that are not "popular" but on the whole do things that are for what are for the greater good. There is a BIG Big difference between outright oppression and discrimination by a business and what Chickfila does. Trust me. I have had this discussion with gay friends numerous times. But most of them don't listen and just believe whatever they hear in the Huffington Post and on NPR. Then when they tell me they wont eat at a Chick-fil-a I remind them they wont like it anyway because its deep fried and everyone knows gays don't like deep fried food because it makes them fat. The last thing I need to hear is MORE bitching about how fat my gay friends think they are. This just means MORE chick-fil-a for ME. HA!

p.s. I am gay too and christian. So sue me.

Right, I just thought it was funny that she immediately assumed it was Christian rock based on the lyrics. I think it was that "fallen harder than a landslide" song.

I like Lifehouse - love Jason's voice. And he's super-duper cute to look at.

Oh I know the specifics - they are anti-gay marriage, which is not pro-marriage at all. It's anti-gay, period. No organization that is opposed to gay marriage is doing things for the 'greater good' - they're doing things to support religious affiliations, which do not belong in debates over civil issues like marriage.

Target favors pro-business candidates, regardless of their position on social issues. The situation is very different from Chick-Fil-A. I don't agree with that, either, and no longer shop at Target unless it's essential.

However, I won't begrudge you the food or judge you for it - I've never eaten there because I don't eat chicken, but people are free to eat what they like regardless of political affiliations. Good food is good food, period, and everyone I know that eats there raves about it.

Wow. That sounds like it could've come out of the mouth of Maggie Gallagher herself.

It's still discrimination. It's like saying, "I'm not racist -- I'm just against interracial marriage."

I'd never tell you or anyone else that they shouldn't eat at Chick-fil-A, but any company that views me as a second or third-class citizen isn't getting my business.

Right... so I suppose depriving GLBT from the 1000+ basic rights that straight people have is "for the greater good." And I'm sure continuing to deny the legal recognition of family units headed by gay parents is for the "greater good" as well. I suppose Chik-fil-a's support for those "pray the gay away" ministries is also teaching young people to have high self esteem and to accept themselves- of course, it's for the greater good.

Trust me, Chick-fil-a would discriminate against and harass GLBT if there weren't social and legal constructs in place to prevent them from doing so. So rather than being overt in their disdain for gays, they choose to oppress gays via insidious, indirect methods such as supporting these fringe institutions, all the while getting a nice tax break for themselves while they're at it.

If you don't take a stand on something, you'll fall for anything.

I agree with you 100%. Being gay myself, I wish I had the strength to forego chick fil-a but every once in a while I give in to the temptation. It's like an addiction.

Sorry to have opened this can of worms on this thread but maybe through this lens everyone will understand my distaste for My Heart. Connecting it with Chick fil-a style music is certainly enough to ruin the mood of the album for me. I guess that just means I'll have to buy a copy of the original cd too. And I really wish they'd do a vinyl release too. I buy a lot of current music and IYD is definitely an outlier nowadays in the fact that there is no vinyl release.
