And it got terrible word of mouth. I remember it well, because eventhough I didn't like the album, I tried to get others to and they did and didn't like it.
The album wasn't a total miss for me. It was a step up from some of the god-awful previous albums. This album is the real deal.

But you're confusing your own opinion with The Way Things Are. It's fine if you don't personally like the album and it doesn't work for you, but you're projecting that out by insisting the album was a failure when it wasn't.
Like "RS gave TISL 3.5 stars only because of The Dance". You have no basis for this assertion at all other than your own opinion. There's absolutely no proof of this being the case. The album may have *sold* better initially because of The Dance, but then again The Dance was 1997 and TISL was 2001 so even that assertion is arguable.
"Many reviewers did NOT follow suit". This is flat-out false when you look at the Metacritic reviews. In fact, TISL was the first Nicks album since Bella Donna that *didn't* get absolutely panned somewhere. The Metacritic reviews show a mix of glowing reviews and average reviews, which is a step up from some of the scathing reviews some of the earlier albums had received.
Your recollection of word of mouth is again based on your own personal experience. My recollection was that the word of mouth on The Ledge was that this was an exceptional album, that critically it was very well-received, and that many people were singing the albums praises. This was a much different vibe from previous Nicks releases (Rock A Little and The Other Side of the Mirror) that definitely got some criticism heaped on them.
