In Your Dreams Songs Interpretation Thread

If someone wants to combine this with the other In Your Dreams threads, that's fine, but I just thought it would be a little more organized to have a thread specifically for this topic.

I'm most interested in You May Be The One right now. This verse:

And then, there was the kiss
Right out there in the universe
How did that happen?
No it could not happen worse
You forget yourself
it could not happen worse
You broke my heart, broke my heart

Upon first listen I thought of that Dance show where during Go Your Own Way (I think) Lindsey comes over and kisses Stevie and she just stands there like, did that really just happen in front of everyone?

Regardless of this was the specific moment Stevie is speaking about, I still feel confident that the song is about Lindsey.

What do you guys think? Thoughts on other songs?

Y'know, even after listening to it straight through at least 10 times, I feel like I'm only beginning to take in the lyrics. I honestly hadn't realized how totally, completely You May Be the One is about LB until you mentioned it.
That song is swimming in ambivalence. Even after the repeated "You may be the one, but you'll never be the one," it's hard to know where she lands on the issue. Even as the lyrics basically conclude that it won't work, I used to love you, etc. she ends with the note that "we were magic." Also interesting that she chose to title it "You May be the One" instead of "You'll Never be the One." And her voice is pretty crazy seductive on this one...
Might very well be that kiss. An interesting thought.

Seriously, I'm so excited about all of these songs. I think new meanings, new things to love will keep coming to all of us for a long time.

My favorite nod to Lindsey on You May Be the One? How reminiscent the guitar parts are to his style. Nicks is getting sly in her old age.

"We were magic" completely reminded me of all the comments Stevie makes about how amazing she and Lindsey sounded in the beginning, how their voices blended so perfect.

I'm going all "shipper" tonight on ya, folks. I apologize.

For What It's Worth

I got to sing, I got to dance
I got to be a part of a great romance
Still forbidden, still outrageous
Only a few around us knew,
but no one said a word
It was contagious

Stevie is reminiscing The Dance tour and the return of Fleetwood Mac. She got to experience the huge, sold out crowds again and the excitement of the early years. She also rekindled her romance with Lindsey.

Looked out the window, we watched the cars fly by
I look at you and I start to cry
What you did was, you saved my life
I won't forget it

Someone told me a while ago that Lindsey talked to Jess, Stevie's dad, in '93 about Stevie's addiction and this was a factor that led up to Stevie entering rehab. I think that is what she is referencing here.

You said, "Even if I left my girlfriend,
Packed up my stuff, loaded up my car
Drove down to your house with good intentions
Came through your door
For what its worth"

And here's where Kristen comes in.

I got to love, I rode the rails
You came with me because you cared
I was broke and I was scared
You held my hand, took away my fear
We knew it couldn't last, that was hard
Looked out the window, we watched the cars fly by
I look at you and I start to cry
What you did was, you saved my life
I won't forget it

You said, "Even if I left my girlfriend,
Packed up my stuff, loaded up my car
Drove down to your house with good intentions
Came through your door
For what its worth"

I won't forget it

You said, "Even if I left my girlfriend,

Drove down to your house with good intentions
Came through your door
For what its worth

(repeat)

For what its worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth

I think at the time, all Stevie had was anger towards the situation ("Fall From Grace") and now she's telling Lindsey, though she was hurt, she understands now. You can't walk away from committments, even if you want to. And he saved her life. How could she ever forget that? "For what it's worth". .. it's 14 years later, but here's her own little apology in a way.

LikeAWillow 04-28-2011 01:10 AM

On FWIW, I actually agree more with what Grace said in the other thread: it's a reflection on a love-life well lived with Lindsey, moreso than a particular situation. I love the line "I got to be part of a great romance." There's a finality to it and a note of reflection that shows so much more...maturity...than most of her songs about Buckingham. Even the title, For What It's Worth...I love that she doesn't need it to work out anymore. It was still worth something.

holydances 04-28-2011 01:20 AM

Seriously, For What It's Worth is one of Stevie's best songs in a lonnng time.

michelej1 04-28-2011 02:46 AM

Well, I have to say I don't think FWIW is about Lindsey at all. My favorite parts that I do take to be about Lindsey are when she says he said, "I'm so afraid."

Also, when she says, "put down that guitar and gave me a rose."

The the way she says "that" guitar reminds me of the way she said she had to pry the guitar out of his hands and put him to bed, because all he did was sit on the floor playing it.

If she'd said "your" guitar, it would have been one thing, but when I hear THAT it almost sounds like a little antagonism towards the guitary (like saying, "that darn cat!") and that reminds me of all the times Lindsey's guitar must have gotten on her nerves.

But the line reminds me of being with someone for such a long time that you take one another for granted and the person isn't romantic to begin with. So, in the small second where they do, break with routine and make a romantic gesture (the rose) it means so much.

I love the honesty of that song. It's like a cross between Landslide and After the Glitter Fades. It also sorta of reminds me of Dreamboat Annie, the song.

I think so too. It's my favorite, along with Moonlight and Italian Summer.

I don't think this song is about Lindsey too. I was thinking Tom Petty, maybe ? I just don't see how Lindsey "saved her life"...

Wait, what?! How do i not know about this ? Do we have a video, photos, any kind of proof ?!! Please, someone tell me (shipper to death.).
You may be the one might be about Lindsey, it makes sense...but to me, the only song that is OBVIOUSLY about him is Everybody Loves You. The others i'm not sure.

5:30 minutes in you'll see it.

Given your shipper credentials, if you've never seen it, watch Silver Springs from this show too. The same person uploaded that.

Thanks!
This kiss was...agressive. And i don't think she liked it.
Anyway, i think i've seen Silver Springs from this show, but i'm going to watch it again. There was definitely something going on during The Dance tour...Just saying :).

Lyric correction: "No, it could not have been worse, you forgot yourself"

I think the kiss was between the guy and someone else, not her - and that's why it broke her heart. And, that's why she used to dream he was an angel.

I do think it's a throw back to the beginning, being at the train station, leaving SF and going on the journey together. From that view point, the gf in the first chorus could be LB's first gf, Sally.

That's interesting and I didn't think of it that way. That kind of makes more sense.

But I'd still like to believe I'm right even if it's unlikely. :p
