I'm not near DSL today, but hopefully Monday. Buried in some of the Masters are several takes of "Julia" surrounded by studio junk, false starts, dead air, etc. So, in a track of 14 minutes, there will be two versions of "Julia" in there. I went through all of the Masters of "Julia" last year, and found several takes I'd ignored, because they were in the midst of that kind of stuff. So, I edited them out of the bulk.

NOT counting the a capellas or the piano demo, I have at least 21 versions of "Julia". That should be my project Monday!!!

twenty one versions? Jesus H.

A previous post said #5 was the clearest, best version. Agree?

Meaning, sounding like it would fit in on Bella Donna "perfect", where every vocal is precise and measured? Yes, that "Julia" fits perfectly well with the Iovine~manufactured sound.

But I don't think it has Stevie's most emotional vocals at all. Other takes give me chills! Stevie sounds so weary, "When I run through your door, I am freed from my slavery..." on other takes, truly into the lyrics. I don't think the final released versions are necessarily the best vocals they could have chosen, from the many, many takes of every song on Bella Donna. They do sound the most commercial and radio~friendly, though.

For "Julia", "Take #5" is studio perfection, sounds great, but not too emotional for me.

Oh, and I prefer the line "She does two things" instead of "She would suffer for the love..."

I will say that "Take #5" has the best vocal harmonizing of all of the Bella Donna versions. It would sound wonderful on the album!

Sounds awesome Mike!! Though Julia has always been an OK song for me but maybe thats because I'd gotten such a lousy sounding cassette tape back in the day copy. All those hand me down versions don't make it sound very good. I do also perfer the line : She does two things as well. Just like in the song The Dealer: I love the line 'Jesse showed me at an early age' the faster version always my favorite. I'd love to hear the other versions mentioned or the highlights maybe (cd?) sometime. Sometimes as nice as it is to have many takes sometimes there isn't much of a difference and than to listen to the same song over and over again. Ugh. Its just too much so I give you kudos for doing that!! Thanks so much for your hard work !!!
