RIP Liz Taylor

You Are Not Alone.

She's with Dick, MJ, and Monty now.

:(

What is your favorite Liz Taylor movie? Mine is A Place In The Sun. "Tell Mama all...": certainly in the upper echelons of Hollywood romances. An expose of American greed and class, at its heart it is a movie about the mysteries of attraction and the depths of love. She's so beautiful in it that, though shot in exquisitely textured black-and-white, her violet eyes still pop. There's many more, of course, from Clarence Brown's mighty National Velvet to her definitive representations of gay empathy in Suddenly Last Summer and Reflections In A Golden Eye to her erotic breakthroughs in The Sandpiper and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to her mythic portrayal of the American daughter in Father of the Bride.

We are not alone.

RIP Liz Taylor...

sad to hear that she passed. She was a very beautiful woman, at least now she belongs to the ages...

I actually gasped out loud when I read this news on Digital Spy, a total shock and it's really sad. I had to watch Cat On A Hot Tin Roof in English Literature at AS Level, and she was amazing in it.

Even though her health had been deteriorating for years, I was still kind of shocked to read this. :(

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is prob. my favorite movie of all-time.

A Place in the Sun is another favorite. The problem I had with Suddenly Last Summer & Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is that they went to such lengths to purge the films of any reference to homosexuality, that they ended up not making much sense.

I seriously couldn't believe what I read when I saw it this morning. I'm still trying to get the lump in my throat to go away. :distress: Will love & miss her forever.

HejiraNYC 03-23-2011 08:41 AM

Oh dear. :distress:

Considering the numerous times she has cheated death in the past, I guess I was under the assumption that she was immortal. I remember reading my first issue of Life magazine and Liz Taylor was on the cover with the headline "Liz Taylor at 50." Whew, that was a while ago!

I can't believe I remember it so vividly! I thought she was simply the most stunning woman who ever lived. Her personal life was a hot mess, but she always maintained an air of dignity and took the high road with her career and her charity work. What an extraordinary individual and an extraordinary life.

I read the title of this thread and said "WHAT" out loud. How awful and sad, she'll be missed :(

I don't know how I feel about Liz Taylor. Yes, she championed the Aids cause, but she struck me as a creature of needs and entitlement.

I do not understand this statement at all. She really was the FIRST mainstream, high profile Hollywood celebrity to take up the fight for AIDS research and care. She had everything to lose by taking such a fearless stand on what was considered to be a "gay disease" - a taboo that nobody else would touch. What "needs and entitlement" are you referring to? Just because she was the first woman in Hollywood to be paid $1 million to star in a movie (Cleopatra)? Just because she took a hard line against a studio system known for exploiting starlets? If demanding what she feels she is worth is "entitled," then I think we could all benefit from a little bit of "entitlement."

Was never really a big Liz fan, the film I like most of hers is Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.

Taylor and Burton reunited at last

This is such a loss. I really can't find the right words to say. I've admired Elizabeth Taylor so much, and like everyone else, I think a little part of me thought she was immortal. She's left so much good behind her, though.

KarmaContestant 03-23-2011 10:25 AM

Goodbye Liz.

Clepoatra was my favorite movie that Elizabeth was in. I remember one weekend my parents and siblings were out of town camping; I was maybe 15 and it was the first time I was left home alone for an entire weekend. I bought a half gallon of mint choclate chip ice cream and settled in on the couch that friday night to watch a movie on HBO. I've always been fascinated by history, and Egypt in particualar.

I ate that entire half gallon of ice cream while watching Cleopatra.

To really tell my story would be indeed difficult
Because of all the different people involved.
Not that there is anything bad written
It’s just all terribly personal
Or maybe I’m just terribly possessive.
My life has been, if I go not a day longer, quite extraordinary.
The happy things have been written with great joy
The tragic things with great care
And the secrets have not been written at all so that no one would ever be hurt by anything I would ever say.
That is not the purpose of my writing
My purpose is to document this incredible adventure before the years have become too clouded
To really remember what a truly incredible experience my life has been.

Right now I live at the top of Old Queens Road and Franklin
And yes, I do have a movie star view
Some say I have everything -
I wonder sometimes if anyone ever really knows what everything is.

Have you got any heart at all?
Yes, and it’s going to stay right where it is.
A musical western, and we all play the parts
But when the play is over, what do you do -
Become overnight casual friends?

You can lose your dreams or keep them
And the unridden horses ride away
And the sons of the prophets are deeply, deeply hurt
And your chances of returning to your past are gone.

Your heroes are dying,
The old ones, the great ones - The ones that you looked up to aren’t looking so good any more
And the ones that are growing up are crazier than we were
But a war can always be won
Well if there is the sense in trying
Not much is really secret anymore
We all grow up and the veils come down…
But the children go on.

A place in the sun
Giant
Cat on a hot tin roof
Who's afraid..

There are a lot...
I liked Cleopatra but just the first part, before the intermission. Then it turns too heavy, slow.

She is great. She was the best.

I think that's why many people are shocked to hear the news.

Dodfather 03-23-2011 11:23 AM

I hope she starts to be reappraised and reappreciated as an actress thanks to the inevitable season of her movies that wull now be on TV. She was a great actress and at her peak was famed for being not only a great beauty but a great actress. It's kind of a shame that all of the hoopla surrounding her marriages, personal life and health had overshadowed that in the last 20 years or so.

We still have Olivia DeHavilland, Lauren Bacall and Doris Day...
