Tusk

So, by my count, LB has nine songs on Tusk (The Ledge, Save Me a Place, WMYTYTO, That's All for Everybody, Not that Funny, That's Enough for Me, I Know I'm Not Wrong, Walk a Thin Line, and Tusk).

I don't think the album, much less these songs out of context has much of a consistent flow to it. His solo albums, though, usually are masterpieces in terms of song ordering. I feel like there is a logical progression for these songs, but I just can't see it. How would you arrange these songs to make the perfect flow-ey LBTusk EP?

(Or am I just speaking nonsense?)

I have made a CD of just Lindsey's songs from Tusk, but I kept them in the same order as the original album. The first three are my favorites on the album anyways, so keeping it in order worked for me! I actually did the same with his songs from TITN ( including the ones co-written with Christine ), except I replaced You and I part 2 with You and I Part 1 :D.

Then to conserve space on the CD, I put them together on just 1 disc. Here's the artwork I made up:

I think it would fit better like this. If I had my choice, I'd drop 'Save Me a Place'.

That's All For Everyone
Save Me a Place
The Ledge
What Makes You Think You're the One
I Know I'm Not Wrong
That's Enough For Me
Not That Funny
Walk a Thin Line
Tusk

Thanks Cammie. Lindsey provides plenty of good stuff to work with!

 Not sure why, but I would have thought you'd have chosen a more up beat opening

I may be way off base, but to me, they all sound like break up songs. (but Lindsey not particularily being the one who initiated the break-up) 'That's All For Everyone' is the starting point. "I can't stay, I can't deceive". 'Save Me a Place' is a 'having second thoughts song "Don't know why I have to go, don't know why I can't stay."....."I'll come running if you love me today". 'The Ledge' and 'What Makes You Think You're the One' are the 'who are to to think you can't live without me' songs. 'I Know I'm Not Wrong' and 'That's Enough For Me' are songs about learning to accept the situation. "Not That Funny' is a 'tired of thinking about this situation' song. 'Walk a Thin Line' is when he accepts that it's over. 'Tusk' is the 'I'm over this' ending.

Wait I actually really like this interpretation of these songs. Obviously pretty much every song ever is about some love or other, and many (especially in this band) are break-up songs, but I really like the progression here. I'm going back and forth as to whether or not I believe this was his intention, but I really, really like this emotional rollercoaster. Although I am a notorious sucker for albums that have this kind of emotional ride/progression...

I'm going to have to try all of these suggestions because (a) who doesn't need another excuse to re-listen to Tusk, (b) they all actually make a lot of sense, and (c) I am really excited about these songs right now.

I'd do it this way:

I Know I'm Not Wrong
That's Enough For Me
What Makes You Think You're the One
Save Me a Place
The Ledge
Tusk
Not That Funny
Walk a Thin Line
That's All For Everyone

Honestly, I would cut a lot of the fat from it and make it into a single album... which by 70's and 80's standards would result in 11 songs or less depending on the total running time. I chose 11 because of FM and Rumours both having 11. IMO though, 12 would have made it perfect.

In this order

SIDE ONE
1. Think About Me (2:44)
2. Save Me A Place (2:42)
3. Sara [Edit] (4:37)
4. What Makes You Think You're The One (3:32)
5. Storms (5:32)
6. Never Forget (3:42)

Total Time (22:49)

SIDE TWO
1. Tusk (3:37)
2. Angel (4:54)
3. I Know I'm Not Wrong (3:00)
4. Over & Over (4:35)
5. Sisters of the Moon (4:43)

Total Time (20:49)

Basically I was trying to create a version that "the critics" and Warner (Reprise) would have maybe been more happy with. Continuing to follow the Rumours pattern so to speak. It wasn't easy because I wanted to put Brown Eyes on there, but couldn't cut the Lindsey or Stevie tracks I put on.

Taking the unwieldy sprawl out of Tusk is like taking the sprawl out of Gone With the Wind.

If you cut Tusk down to one album, it's no longer the epic it was intended to be. It would lose its atmosphere of Major Statement. Its unmanageability & its cornucopia of sounds & moods are its very purpose. It's Fleetwood Mac at the top of the pop culture pyramid, a year or two after the Rumours dust was just beginning to settle. The world expected the band to drive up in a chauffered Rolls-Royce, but they motored onto the scene in a safari of Hummers instead. With Tusk, we're out on the emotional & musical veldt with Fleetwood Mac, in the shadow of a cocaine Kilimanjaro.

Tusk has to be sprawling & unwieldy, otherwise it isn't Tusk. As Stephen Holden called it in his Rolling Stone review, the band is tipsy from Rumours jet lag.

love it!:]:xoxo:

(although that shouldn't mean that people cannot play with sequencing, order, skipping and deleting tracks they don't like... i can respect what Lindsey et al tried to do with Tusk, still doesn't mean i have to listen to all tracks all the time - actually i almost never do:p)

bluefox4000 12-18-2010 12:30 PM

Yea double albums are tough. It's very rare that I play a double album all the way through. There's Always some tracks that I skip......and tusk....for me is no Exception. So trimming the fat is something I do quite often.

Mick
