DISCUSSION: Danny's songs from Kiln House

Ledgies I need your help here. We've arrived to the discussion threads for Kiln House. What are Danny's songs from this album? I have "Station Man" - it seems to be a collaboration between Jeremy and Danny with lots of Christine!

ChiliD, doodyhead - help! :distress:

Danny's songs
1. Station Man
2. Jewel-Eyed Judy
3. Earl Grey
4. Tell Me All The Things You Do

Thanks for your help!

curious

You may have not been aware but fighting for madge/searching for madge and in all probability underway were also colaborations. amongst messers green kirwan mcvie and fleetwood.
also why are you not listing Fleetwood mac in chicago as an album? it was an official release and has songs by them on it

doodyhead 09-20-2010 06:28 PM

station man was a collaboration

by the lot of them
even christine mcvie who is not on the album credits except for artwork

In '75, Christine used to introduce "Station Man" as a "Danny Kirwan song", so I would guess he had a majority of the song done and just had Jeremy & Christine (or is the McVie in the songwriting credit actually John?) help finish it off.

I would credit the following to Danny from Kiln House:

Station Man
Jewel-Eyed Judy
Earl Grey
Tell Me All The Things You Do

With the rest being pretty much instigated (either via songwriting or by doing the lead vocal on a cover tune) by Jeremy.

To me a collaboration is when there equal writing/vocal contributions by more than on person. If you and others feel that Fighting/Searching for Madge should be considered collaborations, that's fine by me. Eventually there will be a "Favorite FM collaboration" battle.

In a few days, I'm gonna do a "catch all" thread for Peter's "other songs."

Oh, and what's your opinion on the question that I actually asked?

Thank you ChiliD, those 4 songs was kinda what I was thinking. I'll wait for others to give their opinions before its made official.

Christine used to introduce "Station Man" as a Danny Kirwan song on the 75-76 tour bootlegs. The main riff probably came from him.

So--my thoughts on these songs. Kiln House is one of my favorite FM albums. Although there's quite a difference between Danny's and Jeremy's musical styles, the album has a unified sound and the songs are all performed in a relaxed way.

Station Man has always intrigued me. It sounds great on the album, and it's even better live. It's one of those songs that, in my opinion, sounds good no matter which lineup is doing it. If you haven't heard it, check out the second live version on the Madison Blues set. It's smoking.

Tell Me is a great groove tune, lots of searing guitar work. I've always loved this tune/jam.

Jewel Eyed Judy. Love it. Does anyone else think this sounds like a Beatles' tune?

Earl Grey. The repetition is hypnotic.

OK this is mine

I would follow the lead of ChiliD and show these as Danny's

Station Man second best
Jewel-Eyed Judy a little to schmaltzy for my taste
Earl Grey..... interesting enough
Tell Me All The Things You Do....great tune my favorite if dannys on this album

ChiliD has it spot on - those four are the Kirwan songs for this album. The others are Jeremy's compositions except for the covers of "Buddy's Song", "Hi Ho Silver" and "Mission Bell". I'd agree also that the choices of covers were Jeremy's.

"Station Man" would be Danny's music, with lyrical contributions from Jeremy and Chris. I believe Chris was still contracted elsewhere so she couldn't be credited on the album. I think that any credits to John were actually her work. I doubt that Chris would be helping much musically with Danny's songs, mostly because he didn't really accept much help in that department, except from Peter. It was more the other way round, with Danny helping Chris, like on her "Future Games" songs.

"Jewel Eyed Judy" likewise, Danny's music with lyrical help from Chris, and probably Jenny Fleetwood, rather than Mick. "The Purple Dancer" was also partly credited to Mick, and Jeremy said here somewhere that it was Jenny Fleetwood who helped with that song. The lyrics to "JEJ" are a bit too advanced to be Danny's. Someone said it sounded like a Beatles tune - I always thought that too. Picture Paul McCartney singing it...

"Earl Gray" and "Tell Me" are just Danny.

It's actually too bad that Danny didn't hook up with Paul after leaving FMac...I think he would've been the perfect lead guitarist for Wings.

Thanks to all for your input. :xoxo: We'll count the following to Danny...

Station Man
Jewel-Eyed Judy
Earl Grey
Tell Me All The Things You Do

I disagree, for his health. Danny Kirwan's spot with Wings during the late 70's was occupied by Jimmy McCulloch. Jimmy died from a heroin overdose in 1979. Even the Stones tried to recruit Danny Kirwan before they snagged Mick Taylor. In either case, Danny Kirwan would not have seen 1980.

"Station Man" is the best song on this album. Just listen to the Grateful Dead song "Passenger", from "Terrapin Station". Phil Lesh has admitted in writing where it came from.

"Jewel Eyed Judy" was unique in 1970. Its' approach has been copied many times over since then. A soft dynamic first verse, to follow a loud dynamic chorus. It wasn't done at the time, Queen was famous for this technique a couple years later.

"Tell Me All The Things You Do" always sounded like a song that was never finished. The song lyrics are a chorus, with no verse. Yet the music is outstanding.

My favorite song on Kiln House is 'Jewel-Eyed Judy'.

I was speaking strictly from a musical standpoint. Just because Jimmy McCulloch had a smack problem doesn't mean Danny would have, too. Being that he was having to FRONT Fleetwood Mac magnified his insecurities (that and having the "I'm a white man who SHOULDN'T be playing the black man's blues" syndrome). Being a sideman in Wings where the spotlight would rarely be on him, and playing POP music rather than "the blooze" probably would've HELPED his situation rather than been his downfall.

As far as the Stones are concerned, everytime they've been on a guitarist search, they recruit EVERYBODY (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Rory Gallagher, Steve Cropper, Wayne Perkins, etc; anyone with the slightest bit of "a name", they recruit), so I don't take much stock in their "recruiting Danny". I compare it to baseball fans talking hypothetical player trades..."Oh, it'd be great if the (enter favorite team here) got Ryan Howard." I could see that maybe some journalist was in the room when Keith hypothetically asked Mick, "Hey, what about Danny Kirwan?". I think that's about as far as it went.

This is a really interesting thread!
Danny might have become more relaxed by not having to deal with the spotlight. I too always thought of the Beatles while hearing "Jewel Eyed Judy". And he covered "Let It Be" on Midnight In San Juan. And some of the strings on "Lovely Days" (Second Chapter) are very similar to parts of "Eleanor Rigby".

On the other hand, in spite of the troubles with the spotlight, I think Danny's own ego was growing too. Thrilled by getting to play with one of his musical heroes (Peter), Danny soon became jealous. He did pour a pint over Peter during the "Faithful tour" of 1971, didn't he?
Imagine him doing the same thing to Macca?

Anyway, "Earl Gray" is a magical song... It isn't "going" anywhere, but I imagine Danny getting up.. only him awake in the house. Early English morning.. sipping tea.
That song could only have been written by Danny!

The wah-wah at the end of "Tell Me All The Things..."

I'm rediscovering Daniel David again.
What a talent!
