Interesting. Folklore changes over the years.
I was deep into the LA music scene in the mid 80s, and at the time, people thought SN was on 'Dont Come Around' but the official word from both record companies (Modern, and whoever Petty was on) was: 'Definitely No, Stevie is not on the song'. I don't doubt Dodfather if decades later he heard otherwise, and it may be true. At the time, it may have been a contractual thing that prompted the denials, who knows. Legalities, money, drugs, something.
She's not in the original 1980's video, however.
Dodfather, maybe you meant the decades later concert video of the song on Tom Petty's dvd box set from a few years ago, the Peter Bogdonovich film , and Stevie did sing back-up on 'Don't Come Around' and others, circa 2006?
One untrue SN tidbit was that she sang backup on the Maria Vidal (who?) album in the late 80s or early 90s, whenever? I hunted down a promo copy of the album, and Stevie is not on it. As for 'Lay Down Your Arms' on a Ringo Starr cd, maybe from the 90s, Stevie sings backup, they say, but you don't hear her voice clearly at all. Very generic backup vocals mixed so far back it may be Stevie's Yorkie singing for all we know, it could be anyone. Edit: I'm wrong about that and have been corrected. Thanks for the PM with the audio.
I also find (or hear) her to be only minutely audible on the backup vocals on 'Hello It's Me' from the live album Todd Rundgren did 'Back To The Bars'-- that one I haven't played in decades, though, maybe I should dig out the old vinyl and put headphones on, but her participation, while credited, was certainly lost in the mixing, to my ears. I do recall hearing her on a very old Warren Zevon album singing backup vocals on 'Mohammad's Radio' in which she was credited as Stephanie Nicks (mid 1970s or so).
