The Very Best of Stevie Nicks - 11/07/2006

I thought I would start a new thread than hijack the other one. WEA was to have released a new Stevie compilation on November 7, 2006, with the track listings on their web-sites. In late September 2006, all solicits were canceled, with an assurance that the collection would be released later. Of course, it ended up being Crystal Visions in March 2007.

I thought maybe we could debate the pros and cons of what was released and what wasn't. I love Crystal Visions for giving the casual or new listener the inclusions of "Rhiannon", "Landslide" and "Silver Springs". Plus, the Melbourne live songs are amazing versions for us old-timers! A new listener would rather have "Rhiannon" than "If You Ever Did Believe" or "The Nightmare", I would think. They would know "Rhiannon" and think it works with a Greatest Hits package.

I so like this track listing far better! This is definitely the songs that a Stevie fan would love to hear on a BEST OF disc, especially with some beloved live numbers, and old gems like "Cryin' in the Night". I would have loved to have gotten this album!

This is a BRILLIANT tracklisting! It goes right back to the beginning and ends bang up to date. The Nightmare is suitably random but I think it works. It's no more random than the live version of Rock and Roll we got on Crystal Visions, a song that hardly had any associations with Stevie at all apart from some live performances that only fans would know!

I do notice the absence of any Mac stuff (since the version of Dreams was very much just Stevie and Deep Dish) and am wondering if there was some rights issue that led to this release being cancelled and replaced with Crystal Visions? Maybe they thought it would be better to wait and sort out rights for Silver Springs, Rhiannon and Landslide and re-do that package with Mac stuff on it? Anyone got any information on this?

I really don't like the Deep Dish version of Dreams and rather it wasn't included at all but I suppose it would have been a good compromise on this collection if they couldn't put any other Mac suff on

At least all her albums are represented here, including Street Angel, so I really like this as a collection. Such a shame we ended up with what we did... I only really bought Crystal Visions for the excellent dvd and rarely listen to it as an album.

"Dreams" had just been a big hit in Late 2005. That's why this version was on this collection and Crystal Visions.

I still shudder thinking about listening to the edited versions of "Edge of Seventeen" and "Stand Back" on a Greatest Hits collection ~ chopping out the second verse of "Edge of Seventeen"? You wouldn't ask Bob Dylan to do that! ;)

But, yes, "Rock and Roll" is a silly inclusion (and the Soundstage version is better!).

BTW, I make my own Stevie collections and never listen to the released things. So this 2006 collection(s) offers me nothing new. Crystal Visions gave me NEW live versions of "Rhiannon", "Edge of Seventeen", "Landslide", and "Stand Back" (iTunes Bonus), PLUS a great new, better mix of "Silver Springs"!!! No comparison for me! :)

Mike,

As someone who loves to tinker around with play lists and running orders myself, I give you props for a very cool track listing, though I would sequence it differently. And you nearly bit my head off when I included the edit version of Edge of Seventeen, btw. ;)

In the other thread when we were debating this I actually kind of agree with you that some of the edit versions don’t do the songs justice, such as the missing verse in Edge or the mandolin part that goes into the 2nd verse of ROF that is missing, but some edits I think are just fine, such as Stand Back and Nightbird. My reasons for including the edits on my track listing was mainly due to the fact, how many times can we rehash the same songs (whether they were remastered or re-tweaked by Chris Lord-Alge or not - the casual fan wouldn’t know the difference). At least providing the original single version (edited and or alternate mixes) would give the fans something different. Amway, these were the official single versions so … but I do like your list, I just would sequence it differently - I’m all about the flow.

Shortly after CV came out, I had a friend design an alternate version of a best of CD that I would have preferred to see. I didn’t like the track-listing on CV, I hated her using old photos (again Stevie?) I wanted something new and fresh. Looking at these covers now I would do them differently, but I love these pics and still like the songs I picked for my own CD. But I’d probably do it a little different today.

Love it, Travis!

Would "My Heart" have been the "new song" for the compilation? Great idea! New song and new single ~ and NEW pics!!!!!

BTW, these track lists aren't mine ~ these are the official track listings that Warner Bros. released in July 2006.

I think it's cool that the dancier numbers are lumped together. It still seems like a "journey" that Stevie is taking us on. We know how she loves her sequencing skills!!!! :)

I would have been absolutely horrified if any Tracy Young or anybody else's "after the fact" mixes had ended up on a SN "Best Of" package.

I also would have been very surprised, since no one who made the album had anything to do with these mixes.

BTW, the one Mike listed, the "Tracy Young mixshow" version... which one is that? What track number is that one on the single?

I absolutely love, love, love, love CV the way it is, but I would have preferred the unedited long version of Planets with the "death" lyric. That's the only thing I would have changed.

Maybe I love CV so much because I'm comparing to it TimeSpace, I don't know.

Also, I think all those edits and remixes belong on their own collection of edits and remixes.

\.

is it possible for me to get this anywhere? i have heard so much of it, but apparently it's different than the remix i have....????? where can i get it?

Would have liked to have seen the video for If You Ever Did Believe on the dvd... Nightbird and After The Glitter Fades would also have been nice on the cd... plus the extended version of Planets of the Universe instead of the album version. Glad the Tracy Young version wasn't included on CV.

There's so many ways you can cut these greatest hits.... This just leaves the door open for a more definitive collection in the future...

Yes, even though I don't think "My Heart" would have set the charts on fire, I basically put it on there as the "new song", since that seems to be finished and the only newer song out there that doesn't sound like a demo. I personally love the song. So yes, start the collection off with something new and fresh then boom, the classics. I picked certain edited/remix versions such as "Love's A Hard Game To Play", "Maybe Love ..." and "Sorcerer" (Sheryl Crow Edit) since they were never officially released on a US CD (aside from any promos).

Oh, and the track listings you posted were actually listed by the label? Wow, that's actually kind of impressive to me - not your standard 'best of' collection.

Travis 04-02-2010 11:28 AM

Oh, and I'm not crazy about the Tracy Young mix of "Planets ..." myself (as some mentioned) but, it was the "popular" one. I prefer the Illicit remix myself - it's more Stevieish.

There are two Tracy mixes on the single. Is the one that everyone's referring to track 1 or track 2? Not that it matters much to me, because it's the last track that belongs on any "Best of" comp, IMO.

1. Planets Of The Universe (Tracy Young Club Mix)
2. Planets Of The Universe (Tracy Young Universal Dub)
3. Planets Of The Universe (Illicit Club Mix)
4. Planets Of The Universe (Illicit Vocal Dub)
5. Planets Of The Universe (Illicit Vocal Dub Instrumental)
6. Planets Of The Universe (Extended Album Version)

(Side note: A friend of mine [who still thinks it's 1980, is NOT a Stevie fan at all, and loves all things punk and hates all things classic rock ] told me "this is the best techno maxi-single I've ever heard in my life!)

It looks like it's still commercially-available. Here's the link to Amazon:
