"Julia" ~ My Favourite Version

Well, second favourite, but I don't have a Masters quality version from The Wild Heart.

But I LOVE this outtake from Bella Donna! I prefer Stevie singing "She does two things" over "She would suffer for the love". I just like it better.

Wow. No responses in the least. :(

How about an edited-down version of the piano demo?

I Like this one...never heard it before.....It's very raw.

But I agree, I would love to have the Wild Heart version, I haven't heard it in a while, and from what I remember it was a tad more uptempo, edited tighter. Do you have that one Mike ? I have it somewhere on some of the CD's bootlegs I bought off Ebay in the 98' or so.

The piano demo you posted is an edited version of the 9:38 min. demo, where she seems a little bit, Ummm Tipsey, High or both......"That Note! This F**king Note" LOL. Love it.

Well, I was going to respond, but I get the feeling you'd rather not hear from me! lol... (That is, if you even remember me from the "reel list!)

But seriously, I agree with you on this one! I like this one a lot!

Christopher, I'm always looking for a clearer copy of "Julia" from The Wild Heart!

I edited this piano demo of "Julia" down from 18:07. I was just trying to find it as a complete song, without false starts or other stuff. Although I love "That note! It HAUNTS me! That ****ing note!" But I was just trying to make a version for people to put in their Stevie Collections.

Nice seeing you again, Jim!!!!!!!!!

Nice thread Mike.

Julia is definitely one of my favorites. As someone else said recently, it's very much in the style of Sara, or the Rock A Little demos. Romantic, tender, and a little bit grandiose. It's very Roy Bittan.

But as much as I love it, it really doesn't seem to have a place on either album she demoed it for.

I'd like to see her call rename the song 'Suffer For The Love', or 'Two Thing', or 'Light of the Sunset', or something else...and then re-record it. All the same musicians and in the same style, but just, like, ****in' hangin' out over the ocean. Or rope off a big section on the beach and then move all the equipment and the players out there, and do it.

I like the first one you posted, Mike, I'd never heard it before and it's interesting. I wish I could tweak the vocal levels. I'd really love to just have a finished, released copy of it.

She runs -- like the wind

When I run through your door

I am freed from my slavery

You return to me

For in my house

She does you

She loves you

Oh, I've easily fit "Julia" onto Bella Donna! The ultra-polished, mixed and mastered "Julia" fits in very well onto the album as I have sequenced it, moving some tracks around, adding the outtakes.

I think the synth songs make "Julia" not quite fit on The Wild Heart, although it goes well with "Gate and Garden", "Wild Heart", "Enchanted" and "Sable on Blond". That album is very schizophrenic, as USA Today reviewed it. I love it, and that version of "Julia", but I think the individual songs hold up well, but maybe not the entire album as a collection. IMO.

"And I open this wine..." Was that an actual lyric, or was Stevie making it up as someone was opening up the Mogen David? ;)

I dont know what my favorite version is classified under, but I have it labeled as "Take 5"... the guy in the beginning of it says "This is Five..." and it starts and it's the BEST! One of my top 5 demos

Fantastic song--always been one of my favorites. Thanks, Mike!

Roy Bittan's business is also quite pretty here. Really sets the mood.

The Master Reel version of 'Julia' really seemed to blow everyone away, it was shared here on The Ledge in early 2007, before you were here, Mike. (What kept you? So nice to have you here, and thank you very much for the songs you have shared).
Many here felt that the production of this 'Julia' (Take 5 is how it was labeled) was epic and it sounded so complete, it was the 6:15 version.
From what I remember, a Ledgie had paid hundreds of dollars for this version of the 'ultimate Julia' and then very generously shared it. He/she legitimately purchased it (from storage in a warehouse where it had remained, unwanted and unclaimed for decades, so it was all legal)... I believe Stevie and her management had every opportunity to purchase it or pay the back-storage fee and declined, can anyone confirm this past paragraph? Or if I am remembering wrong, please correct me.

mikebise 03-19-2010 06:04 PM

Yes, I love that version, too (and the other 19 outtakes I have of "Julia"). But, as wonderful as the production is on that 6:15 version, I like this rougher one much better.

Like most of the songs on Bella Donna, I feel the "Take 5" version of "Julia" is "too perfect". Just IMO. (Can someone post it? I am pretty sure which one you are referring to, but maybe I'm wrong).

I feel this version (and several others) convey more of the emotionality of the song itself in Stevie's voice. Plus, as I said above, I MUCH prefer that, after Stevie sings, "So, Julie, just what is it that you do now?" that she answers:

"She does two things... TWO THINGS!" It makes you wonder WTF Stevie is talking about ~ but in a good, Stevie Way!

And the ending is so much better, with:

"No fool...
She does two things... two things...
She loves the stars and she loves you!"

rather than:

"HeyHeyHeyHeyyy YEAH!!!"

IMO

David, RoyB makes "Julia" such a standout! I always thought that, if Stevie ever re-records "Julia", that she had better have Roy on piano again ~ nothing less will do! :)

mikebise 03-19-2010 06:07 PM

Oh, the first verse of this "Julia" gives me chills! Stevie's voice!!!!

Yes, other versions sound better on the harmonies of "You return to me", I will admit. That makes it sound perfectly Bella Donna-ish.

BTW, doesn't Bobbye Hall work that tambourine?!?!!!!!

Nathan 03-19-2010 06:10 PM

I have 3, 8, 7, 9 and 1. 19:26 piano demo, the WH demo (Gordon Perry, Dallas) and the 2 things version posted here today by Mike.

Can someone post 5?

I'll bet it was an actually lyric. Just before midnight, waiting for a sign, open the wine, I think were all lines, but I think they were all perceived to be maybe weak, or trite.
