If You Could Ask Stevie's Parents One Question...

This goes along with the "ask someone a question" series.

I'd ask them if they knew the full extent of Stevie's cocaine habit while it was happening, and how they handled that.

I wonder if they ever did an intervention with her? I'm sure they were worried.

Then I'd gush over how talented she is, and how they must be so proud of her career:)

I'd ask them what their favorite Stevie era was.

For real, you would really ask such a personal question as this?

No-Never! I knew it sounded too personal when I typed it. I guess I was wondering out loud.

I'd probably really ask what they think certain songs are about (to which they'd dutifully reply-Mick Fleetwood..lol).

I'd ask her mother what career she would have preferred for Stevie (or if she preferred Stevie to be a homemaker).

When I was younger, my mom said, 'I totally believe that you're going to be a singer and a famous songwriter. But just in case, Stevie, I need you to take typing and I need you to take shorthand. And if you go to college, we'll pay for everything.' And I went. I think that you should get the best education you can, and then if you want to go off and be a total entrepreneur space cadet, that's fine. But if you are called upon to take care of somebody or keep something together, you gotta have studied something.

My mom got used to it and had a lot of fun, but she's much more practical, frugal ~ she still sniffs her nose at my dad's and my expensive tastes ~ and she wanted more than anything else for her daughter and son [Christopher] to be independent and self-assured.

Thanks for the info! I remembered Stevie saying her parents wanted her to finish college, but couldn't remember what career path they preferred.

This made me think back to the interview where she said her mother would walk around Stevie's house and tell her she didn't need to have a fire going in every room.

I don't recall Barbara commenting on it, but I do recall reading/hearing of the "excess" . . . (certainly don't doubt any of it)

http://rockalittle.com/rs51498.htm

Stevie: Well, I spent three years writing songs after the "Street Angel" tour. I probably have six songs, so I'll come home to Phoenix in September to write the other six. I can do anything here. I can record, I can write. I can sit by the pool. I can draw. My house here is like my own little resort. At midnight, if I want to, I can go in, light candles and put a fire in the fireplace and spend two hours writing.

Jancee Dunn (interviewer): Fireplace? In that heat?

Stevie: We just crank the air conditioner.

That was kind of funny. I actually chuckled a little when I read that!

I would ask, too. I've always wondered.
