Your 30 – 60 seconds with Stevie

Just thinking about my not going to the NYC signing last year. :(

In a nutshell, I needed more notice than the 2 days I had to plan a trip there, plus I was short on cash. Anyways, when I still WAS considering going, I was thinking what would I say to her. You really have just about 30 seconds as she signs your CD (or another 30 if you buy the DVD too), before the 'Barnes and Noble' people shoo you away for the next person.

So what would you say that’s meaningful, profound, or interesting in 30 or 60 seconds, or even less? Thanking her for her music would be nice, but I’m sure she’s heard it a bazillion times. Her saying thanks in reply will be sincere, but it’s kind of an automated response after having to tell her fans that all the time.

You could ask her a question, but she probably can’t give you much of an answer as she has to move the line along. The most obvious question would be if she’s doing another solo record. Despite her saying she will, I doubt it (though I hope I’m wrong), and she’ll probably give you a pat answer like “well, I’m always writing."

After some thought, I probably would said quickly that having her do the signing means a lot to me and the other people there, and I would probably mention that I really enjoyed her doing ‘Red River Valley’ (great song!) with Chris Isaak (which I think was shortly before the signing), and hope that they do more things together in the future.

Ok, Next in line!

So - what would you say or ask? Or were you actually lucky enough to have been there? What did you ask/say to Ms. Nicks?

You really had less than 10 seconds... maybe a few more if you were lucky.

This is what happened with me:

Stevie: (touches my hand) Hi, how are you?
Me: Um um um um... great, thanks... (Liz Rosenberg diverts her attention for a few seconds)
Stevie: (Stevie signs my DVD and looks at the next person in line) Hi, how are you?

It was a madhouse and I don't regret going for a second. But I would have been disappointed if I had grandiose expectations.

I consider myself lucky. I was a speechless fool, so much so that I forgot the DVD on the table. Thank god I realized it before I walked away. I stood off to the side stupidly, until she noticed me and said "oh is this one yours?" and pointed at my DVD. I imagine I nodded like a dope and rushed to get it. She smiled sympathetically and grabbed my hand and squeezed it.

That was an extremely fun day! If I got the opportunity to go to another signing I would try not to be one of the first few people. It took a while for things to get ironed out. I would guess people a bit further back had a better time of it.

My favorite story was from the young Ledgie who told her how hot she was and her response was, "you know I'm old enough to be your grandmother, right?"

listening to what others experiences were, i guess i was very lucky!

I walked up, smiled, said "hi!"
ME: i just wanted to say, i saw your show last week, for my birthday it was absolutely amazing!
STEVIE: your birthday? how old?
ME: 14
STEVIE: (((grabs my hands and holds them))) honey, you have your whole life ahead of you! Live it to the fullest, because one day you'll wake up like me and realize, "holy crap you're 60!"
ME: (((laughs))) thanks so much, this truly means a lot!
STEVIE: no problem

then my dad walked up:
DAD: just wanted to let you know that you made an incredibly magical moment in my daughter's life
STEVIE: im glad!

then my dad and i walked off, and i BALLLEDDDDDDDD.
after leaving B AND N, my dad and i went to the Union Square Cafe for dinner(which i highly recommend). I was decked out in my Unleashed tour tshirt. The waitress goes, "oh i love Fleetwood Mac! I went to see them last week!" turns out we went to the same concert! We had a whole convo bout Stevie and her music...so when dessert came my waitress told the chef to write "DON'T STOP THINKING ABOUT TOMORROW" on my plate in chocolate!

^^ Yes, I do as well. That is awesome. Great job kiddo!

Guess I could answer the question...

I think it would be a real big thank you. I think that is all I could force myself out. Except maybe to say that I named my daughter Sara in honor of her beautiful song.

If I were to meet Stevie somewhere between, say, 1978 and 1984, I highly doubt "30 - 60" seconds would be really sufficient for what I wanted to accomplish.

PM me if you want some pics-the file size is too large to attach

Great story! Take her advice and "live it to the fullest."

Super jealous of all of you who got to meet her!!!

APerfectLie 02-06-2010 12:18 AM

I am envious to say the least.
Hopefully Stevie does another signing sometime in the near future.
Maybe she will write her book and do a book tour at Barnes & Noble everywhere!!
Dream on silly dreamer:rolleyes:

Oh I had to edit this to say what I'd say.
Thats a really good question.
I mean I'd so want to say something like "OMG! I ****in love you Stevie!"
But I'm sure she has heard that way too many times.
I wanna say something different.
But, in the moment, I'd probably be at a loss for words.

tilthefirefades 02-06-2010 01:43 AM

I think I would say something pathetic like: "you have made my life worth living *balls hysterically*" but realistically I would probably be speechless.

WhiteWitch2001 02-06-2010 10:52 PM

Stevie: What's Your name?
Me: Angela

Stevie steps back on the stage in Atlanta May 15th, 2004.

I got the dedication for Landslide.

Not really a meeting, bu that's my Stevie moment I will forever cherish. Just a pity that show is not one that is bootlegged!!

I looked past her to her mother and said to her, "Thanks for sharing your daughter with us all these years. She: You're most welcome young man. Me: Smile... Look down to Stevie sitting at the table. Hello Stevie. Smile, Hello, what's you name? Jim "To Jim Love Stevie Nicks." Then she reached over the table and took my hand and said thank you. There were a lot a grabby people there and not one of them said anything to her mother or father, so I decided I was going to talk to them for a few seconds before Stevie. It was the right thing to do and I could tell from the touch Stevie appreciated it. I figured what the hell and asked her if I could lean in for a hug. She said yes and I did so and gave her a peck on the cheek.

I don't remember much for the rest of the night except waking up and my face hurt from fking smiling like an idiot for the rest of the night.

I kissed Stevie Nicks! HA!!

Lova ya STEVIE!!!

Brilliant!

Great stories, particularly yours StreetAngel95 ... I'm so glad you had such a great experience!

I've been thinking about these questions this week actually ... and I have no idea what I'd say, in person or in a letter. At the heart of it I think I'd want her to remember me, for my words and actions to impress upon her somehow, and to have said something different and worthwhile ... but what would that be? Answers on a postcard ...

Besides, being in the presence of a hero like that would blow my mind. Making eye contact with Lindsey onstage in Dublin was such an intense experience. If it was just me and him, I think I'd have turned to stone :o
