Peter Asher recording a track with Stevie

January 21, 2010

but Asher has stayed in the business as a producer and talent manager until present. He’s currently working with an impressive roster of artists, including grunge rockers Everclear, the Webb Sisters, and Canadian bombshell Pamela Anderson.

“I’m in the studio producing a Buddy Holly tribute album for the 50th anniversary of his death,” he says of his current project. “For the last couple of days, I’ve been in the studio with Stevie Nicks doing a track with her.”

Asher seems so nonchalant about recording with Nicks that he may as well by talking about picking up his dry cleaning, but it’s just another testament to how many music legends he knows on a first-name basis. After decades of managing and producing, however, Asher returned to the stage with his former musical partner Waller in 2005 for the first time in nearly 40 years. They continued to work and perform together for four more years before Waller died in July 2009.

You know I'm always on top of the latest news.:woohoo: This makes me wonder if she's recording a Buddy Holly song? If so will this track actually appear on the record or will she hate it and scrap the project? When will the release date be? Christmas?

Peter Asher is famous for producing many Linda Ronstadt albums. Maybe Stevie will have such a good experience she'll ask him to produce her next album.

Any info as to what song she is doing??

And I agree, hopefully this will make her want to get back in the studio and record some of her own stuff!!

Not yet. This quote just appeared on the web tonight. For all we know this could be something from years ago that never materialized.

Interesting. Asher is the one who got Waddy hooked up with Linda Ronstadt. I bet he had a role in bringing Asher and Stevie together.

This is great news! I can't wait for a new Stevie song...let alone album!

Mr. Asher's work with Linda Ronstadt remains so well-remembered, though it has been many ages (decades) ago. In '06 he was a wonderfully kind (and nurturing) producer for most of Diana Ross' cd 'I Love You' and wrote such a beautiful tribute in a note to her that she included it in the liner notes of the cd booklet. He's a gentleman.
Sometime around 1992 or so, Peter won a Grammy for 'Producer of The Year' and thanked every artist he had produced the prior year, and mentioned Diana, and also Cher, whose tracks hadn't been nominated but were amongst the acts he'd produced that year. I thought that spoke well of his character, to not only thank the acts he'd produced who had been nominated and or won, but to also, as well, thank all the artists he'd worked with that year.
Eventually, Linda and Asher stopped working together, which is a shame. I love those '70s Ronstadt-Asher albums, and even 1980's "Mad Love" is a favorite of mine. When Linda R finally made a (brief, but very successful) pop-rock comeback in '89 with the quite good 'Cry Like A Rainstorm' cd, it was George Massenburg, not Asher, who produced.
Peter Asher seems to have a way in the studio with a lot of very well-known women. I think it would be very unlikely for Stevie to put anything Asher produced for her 'on the shelf', I think it will definitely be released, and most likely would be an excellent collaborative effort.

I'm guessing she hasn't stepped into a studio for awhile - this could be good!

It's great that she didn't come back home from the tour and just watch talk shows and eat hot pockets all day. Mama done be back to work!

I'm just not terribly interested in hearing another cover from her. I'm not a huge fan if her going retro either. Call me a party pooper.

The article confuses me (not terribly hard to do...) -- it says Peter's doing a show in Canada tonight (1/22) but he's just spent the last couple of days in a studio with Stevie? Where?

If they were releasing something for the 50th anniversary of Buddy Holly's death it would have been last February, since BH died in Feb 1959 in that devastating plane crash. I think Peter and Gordon reunited for a BH tribute show last February. Gordon died last summer, though, so maybe the tribute CD was delayed?

I hope it's true, though. And after Stevie rocks her way through Not Fade Away , maybe then she'll get going on her own new stuff.

Thanks for this timeline. I had an uneasy feeling when I read this article that it was written some time ago.

Come to think of it... isn't this all kind of, um... ick? I mean, it's one thing to commemorate one's birthdate. But I find it a bit morbid to "celebrate" the anniversary of one's death.
