The Hobbit coming in 2011

And icky Tobey Maguire is playing the lead role. I am something less than incensed, but still not happy!! Is there anyone with less charisma than Tobey "lumpy oatmeal" Maguire???!!

Will I have to keep relying on my 1970's cartoon version?

Oh, I LOVE the cartoon version!!! I almost watched it the other night, but opted for LOTR The Two Towers! I read that it's not accurate, but who knows. I can't really see Tobey in the role either, but I would have never thought of Elijah Wood as Frodo , so who knows. I'm glad it's finally getting made!

Who's gonna play Smaug?

In other good news, THE WOLFMAN opens in a few weeks! I hope he attacks the CGI artists & rips their jugulars out.

Eew, I hadn't heard Tobey had been cast as Bilbo. I still can't understand how they think they're going to split that little book into two movies either . Looks like I'll have to keep relying on the '77 Rankin Bass film as well! :distress:

Tobey Maguire has all the sex appeal of Pat Boone. Which is beside the point for this role, but he's just always acting either dour or pissy.

Meanwhile, this is everything.

This hasn't been confirmed, and I work down here. It's a rumour, because Tobey and Raimi have left Sony/Spider-Man 4

Oh good. I remember when Kirsten Drunkst was supposed to play Debbie Harry, and then. . . well, it hasn't happened yet! So maybe good luck will happen again.

I'm still hoping to see James McAvoy as Bilbo. I can't picture Maguire in the role.

But as long as they have Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis back I'll be content. And WETA's Smaug will be beyond magnificent.

What about Bard? Gotta have someone (pardon the word) hot to replace the box-office appeal of Legolas and Aragorn in LOTR, and a bunch of gnarly dwarves just ain't gonna cut it.

i.m.o. the books are all very much worth reading; they're INCREDIBLE - - Very imaginative. And I LOVE the anti-war,
"be careful because power inevitably corrupts" moral of the stories.

By the way there was a cartoon version of "The Lord of the Rings" back in the late 1970s, by somebody named Ralph Backshi. In some strange way I prefer the cartoon version to the big Peter Jackson production! . . . .

(Kind of like preferring the original Star Trek over "The Next Generation" - You know "on a cerebral level" that TNG is "better" -
but there's nothing like the first time, baby lol!)

Ralph Backshi also made a VERY good anti-war cartoon called "Wizards." VERY worth seeing, i.m.o. - the entire thing is on Youtube. I love it, I LITERALLY love it!!! :)

I don't believe that had much to do with the box office draw...

No, but Saruman was pretty hot. ;)

A bit of disagreement there. It would have been massive anyway, but they knew they'd enhance the box office even more by stocking the movies with very attractive actors. Unfortunately, sometimes that hurt the story - did we really need Legolas-of-a-thousand-unbelievable-moves?

BTW, if the only 'cartoon' LOTR you've seen is the Rankin-Bass, PLEASE check out the Ralph Bakshi. A lot of people made fun of, it but I thought it was creative and very much worth watching, and LIGHT YEARS above the Rankin-Bass.

Not really. You said it, it would've been huge regardless. That's the fact. The opinion is whether or not Viggo and Orlando are "hot." Some people might find them attractive, other people may find them repugnant.
