If You'd Like to help in disaster relief to Haiti

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/impact/

There's a list of good organizations that you can support that will send aid to Haiti. If you can, donate as soon as possible. You'll feel good about yourself, too!

the internet never ceases to amaze me either, i have to say~ w/ phones down, it is awsome how so many haitians have been able to let loved ones know they are ok & to send out images of the tragedy there via the net~

very sad, what has happened to these people~

I agree, very tragic. The scenes on television are heartbreaking.

Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You
- written by Stevie Nicks, Keith Olsen

Has anyone ever written anything for you
In all your darkest hours
Have you ever heard me sing
Listen to me now
You know I'd rather be alone
Than be without you
Don't you know

Has anyone ever given anything to you
In your darkest hours
Did you ever give it back

Well, I have
I have given that to you
If it's all I ever do
This is your song

And the rain comes down
There's no pain and there's no doubt
It was easy to say
I believed in you everyday
If not for me
Then do it for the world

Has anyone ever written anything for you
In your darkest sorrow
Did you ever hear me sing
Listen to me now
You know I'd rather be alone
Than be without you
Don't you know

So, if not for me, then
Do it for yourself
If not for me then
Do it for the world

Poet...priest of nothing

Catastrophic what occurred, so sad. And so unfortunately emblematic of the tragedies that can occur in underdeveloped regions with so much poor infrastructure.

Seismologists have an old adage: Earthquakes don't kill people -- buildings kill people.

The Good Friday Earthquake of 1964 (Alaska) was roughly 1,100 times the size of this Haiti quake -- yet its death toll was ~131.

Building collapse, tsunamis, fire, & pathogens are the real earthquake killers. Earthquake building codes in all quake-prone regions are extremely important, you can see.

Some people love the adventure & sensory stimuli of traveling or vacationing in Third World or underdeveloped regions (remember Tommer?).

I'm off to the Red Cross for now.

I miss Tommer.

Sorry if there's any duplicates with the cnn site - -

If you text "Haiti" to 90999 then 10 dollars will go to onto your phone bill; and that money will go to relief efforts.

Donations can also be made here:

https://npo.networkforgood.org/Donat...27765220187970

I'm sure those two are legit. I found the top one, for example, at the website of the Haitian embassy in D.C. The second one is right from the Doctors Without Borders website. That one would be 100% for medical care, I assume. The top one would be for "relief efforts" in general.

Thank you Ghost. Like David, I donated to the American Red Cross. David, that old adage is definitely on the mark.

Haiti is a close neighbor to the US. It's great to see it's getting world wide support-- they are wanting the US Marines to help clear the roads so aid can get in. They were short on safe water as it was before the quake.

Any amount we can donate will help.

Just a short word of warning - be careful what organisations you donate money to:
http://www.iheu.org/node/1973
Many of the listed charities (http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/impact) seem fine, but others I'm a bit more wary of...
I'm not trying to put you off entirely! :distress: I'm just advising a bit of caution...

Yes... by all means, GIVE. But be careful! I recall hearing on the news some years ago about so-called "non-profit" charitable foundations whose executives received ridiculously large compensation packages- like over $500,000/yr. Non-profit for whom?? I also am leery about any charity that is closely affiliated with organizations that do not share my values, e.g., evangelicals, Catholics, Mormons, or any other group that espouses bigotry, pedophilia and Republicanism.

Having trouble understanding something here...

There's helicopters in Florida.

There's water in Florida.

There's tens of thousands of people in Haiti that are gonna die if they don't get water REAL soon.

Why isn't there any water in Haiti? . . . . .

As of THIS (Friday) morning, Americans had "texted" $8 million to relief for Haiti!
That's fantastic.

Sad facts...
Badly damaged seaport -- hard to dock ships.
A tiny airport that is highly congested.
Lack of communication systems.

Disease is going to spread like wildfire.

Did you know that only 50% of Haitians normally have access to clean water? And 19% have access to proper sanitation.

They just have to be patient and cooperate. All countries are trying to help as much as possible.

Haitians are also turning violent, breaking out in fights and looting. Not good. :distress:

Great post--and some of the airport congestion is caused by all the media going down to Haiti. Is it necessary for ALL the local affiliates to also send tv crews to the area? My local tv station anchor was there. That's insane. After 3 days without food or water, these people are desperate. Maybe they will resort to parachuting food and water in.
