Thank you Liam! :)

I knew she recorded "Cry Wolf" first for over a decade, but it just now occurred to me that she was the girl who sang: "Self Control". I LOVE that little song! :o
"You take my self, you take my self control!" |

Jude Johnstone also finally recorded Cry Wolf song on her 2002 album, Coming of Age.
Interestingly, Jude also wrote the song "A Good Guy" which Tricia Yearwood sings on the Don Henley Stormy Weather benefit CD. Jude recorded that song later again on her 2007 album Blue Light. http://www.bojakrecords.com |
Would've rather had Stevie cover Self Control.
Her version of Cry Wolf was good too, though. |

Laura Branigan has a lot of great songs. Her death a few years ago was quite a shock.

I like Stevie's version of Cry Wolf. It's actually pretty faithful to Laura Branigan's. Stevie sometimes modifies lyrics - either by choice or inadvertently. But the lyrics are exactly the same. Looking at some of Laura's videos/performances, she shared a lot Stevie's aesthetics, including wind machines and staircases.

I have both versions, and to me, Stevie's 'Cry Wolf' is perfection. I know a lot of fans don't like it, but I loved it then, and it still resonates with me 20 years later. Laura's version doesn't have the fire in the vocals that Stevie's does. Branigan sang it from a very wounded, quiet, broken perspective.. Stevie sang it with what sounded to me like increasing rage as the song progressed. I also hear wonderful inflections in the two lines ' if you start to crack- if you're feeling humble'- to me it's one of Stevie's most "actressy" vocals, which may be why a lot of fans have trouble with the song. But I think it totally works.
So, I'd answer, "Most definitely, it is Stevie's" in answer to the question in the title of this thread. Oh, and Stevie added a 'baby' near the end that Laura didn't sing, so it wasn't identical to Laura's. |
