There are no lousy Steve Nicks songs. Like any experienced artist, her sound evolves over time and reflects different periods of her life -- some good and some bad.

Cry Wolf
Whole Lotta Trouble
Affairs of The Heart
Ooh My Love
Doing The Best I Can (Escape From Berlin)

There are several cringe-worthy tracks, but I'd rather just focus on one main one. "Beauty And The Beast". Good f'ing lord, what an overwrought, overproduced, self-indulgent piece of ****. Every time I start to praise "The Wild Heart" album in a post, I immediately recall this track, and begin to vomit in my mouth.

For those of us who enjoy Stevie's solo career for its own merits and couldn't care less about the airy fairy mysticism and wardrobe, BATB is the bane of our existence. I know for a fact I'm not the only one, and I'm pretty sure there are far more than just a few of us.

I like the song fine. Album version, beautiful. But the Vegas performance with Nosferatu and the head gear and the ugly dress . . . I just could not take that. That seemed like an SNL skit to me. Honestly, when we wondered about the omission from Soundstage and Peter speculated that maybe they had the licensing rights to use it live, but not for the DVD, I felt like a prayer of mine had been answered. Please end world famine and please don't subject me to the way Stevie is doing BATB. One for two. Yeah baby!

WOW!! I am surprised over this whole Beauty & the Beast thing. I never would have guessed that it would be included in this thread. There were other songs I thought might make the list for some people but BATB wasn't one of them

Jane
Fire Burning
Unconditional Love
Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind
Destiny

I chose not to include songs like Just Like A Woman and I Still Miss Someone because they are cover songs. Both blow majorly though... and should be listed as some of her biggest mistakes, simply because they have nothing to do with her style.

This is my favourite track by Ms Nicks. Interesting how different people can have completely different views of things...

You're not the only one, my friend. You pretty much summed up my entire revulsion behind that song. Yet it still didn't make my top 5... there are frighteningly worse songs than even BATB. I honestly lump most of The Wild Heart in the same category as BATB though, for the reasons you listed: overwrought, overproduced, and self indulgent. I just plain don't like the album. Even though my list has more Street Angel tracks than any other album, I still think that album is better than The Wild Heart... simply because it's good songs are very strong, compared to most of The Wild Heart, which is just one giant sappy, melodramatic piece of crap.

The Highwayman
I Still Miss Someone
The Nightmare
Too Far From Texas
Jane

:( I love "Love Is", "Kick It", "I Sing For the Things", "Doing the Best That I Can", and "Beauty and the Beast". Weird how greatly opinions can change.

I hate:
"Welcome to the Room... Sara"
"Silver Girl"
"I Still Miss Someone (Blue Eyes)"
"Cry Wolf"
"Ooh My Love"

And everything else on TOSOTM.

equeen102289 11-28-2009 04:02 AM

Blue Denim
Desert Angel
Doing the Best I Can
The Nightmare
Welcome to the Room...Sara

gasp. i think the title track off WH is one of her best vocals ever. right up there with whenever you call me friend.

i used to hate beauty and the beast. i thought it was self indulgent and terrible, but now i think maybe it's one of the only self-aware songs stevie has ever written. is there any other song where she takes responsibility for, well, anything? i don't give a f*ck about airy fairy mysticism, nor do i think there is much of it in this song. the metaphor is pretty on the nose for stevie, so the airy-fairy criticism doesn't really work.

i just listened to it again and i enjoyed it more than i ever have.

to me, it perfectly expresses the kind of clarity that can only been gained through the lens of fresh loss.

i'm the first person to charge stevie with being overwrought and melodramatic (see: "has anyone ever written anything for you?"), but to me, the sentiment of BATB feels genuine.

Agreed. Although I'm not a fan of anything BUT the vocal of this video, I do think she sings it beautifully here:
