Illume

I hate to sound needy, but I am in a desperate search for a different version of the song Illume other than the one on Say You Will. Live, demo, a capella, re-mix, anything... I already have the Thnder Mix - but if anyone knows (or has) a different version, please let me know. Or, if nothing exist, let me know that, too.

Thank you all.

J

I love the lyrics of Illume very much, it's sad but great! And I would love to hear more versions of it than the version on the album :)

I Love Illume, one of the best songs she's written in decades. I love the syncopated, stacatto manner in which she structures the verses & chorus and that great final blowOUT vocal that is reminicent of her heyday. The song is like a gregorian chant!

I feel this song is one of her more underrated songs on SYW. Many people let the sped up Lindsey demon voices ruin the whole experience for them, but I feel this adds the perfect menacing threat that underlie's the songs orgins of inspiration.

I would love to hear a demo version, or just acoustic version similiar to the Destiny Rules doc. one of them sitting around strumming the song.

Or you could listen to Richard Ashcroft's "New York", I mean it pretty much is the same song! :)

I agree that Lindsey definitely owes his inspiration for production on "Illume" to Richard Ashcroft's "New York". I doubt very much that Stevie has even heard this song...unless she was a big fan of The Verve. I much more suspect that Lindsey is familiar with The Verve and Ashcroft's solo stuff.

Even more reason that I would love to hear Stevie's original demo of this song. She brought in 4 new demos into the production for SYW to bring in fresh material vs her songs from the vault, including SYW, Destiny Rules, Silver Girl & Illume. From the Destiny Rules doc we hear snippits of all these demos cept' Illume.

Too bad these demos are not in circulation from what I heard in the doc, the Destiny Rules demo rocks!

I have never heard the Destiny Rules demo. Is it available anywhere?

So I'm guessing it was also Lindsey's idea that the lyrics of "Illume" were also based on New York? C'mon, this goes on Stevie.

Illume is the best track on Say You Will, and one of Stevie's all time greats. I've always wondered about other mixes, never heard the Thunder mix. Can someone upload? Would really appreciate it!

You're probably right. After all, she did rip off Sting twice with "Bring On The Night" by the Police for the Edge of 17 guitar and drum riff. Then she did it again with Sting's "Shape Of My Heart" for Bombay Sapphires.

On the other hand, Lindsey totally ripped of an obscure '80s song for "What's The World Coming To," the name of which is escaping me at the moment.

For those who haven't heard Richard Ashcroft's "New York," here it is:

J. Raymond is credited as a writer for What's the World Coming To. If Stevie actually borrowed from Sting that's not credited.

I have to admit, I had to listen to this one a few times before I started to like it. I didn't get it at first. There were moments in the song especially towards the end that took me by surprise...but for the most part I didn't think the lyrics (which I liked and thought made a great poem) were meant to be put to music...it seemed kind of forced and I didn't think it flowed very well. I love it now, though. It just took some getting used to.

Does it bother anyone else that she says Nag Champra? It's Nag Champa. It is also typed in the liner notes as Champra not Champa... That has always bothered me.... Am I alone? With my thoughts.. LOL

GypsyBlueEyes 11-24-2009 01:08 AM

LOL! I realized that not long after first hearing the song. I had to google it because I had no idea what it was :D

I like the sound of Nag Champra better though! When I see a package of it being sold as Nag Champa, it looks a little nude to me without the 'r'. LOL
