Tsunami Advisory for California and Oregon

A tsunami advisory for the coast of California & Oregon has been issued by the WCATWC.

Stay off the beaches until an all-clear is issued by local authorities.

Forecasts indicate that a tsunami with amplitudes in the range of 20 cm to 65 cm is expected along the California & Oregon coast. Tsunamis of this amplitude can generate strong currents dangerous to those very near or in the ocean. The tsunami is expected to build & reach its maximum approximately one & a half hours after the initial arrival.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO.

Doesn't sound too bad. I wanna go sit on a cliff by my favorite local beach and watch it!

Disclaimer: I had no idea that this thing had taken so many lives when I made this post. I'm sorry if the comment seems heartless; I was simply unaware.

They can travel thousands of miles.
The tsunami of - what was that - 2004? -- that killed so many people was caused by an earthquake with an epicenter near Australia, or maybe closer to Indonesia - that general area - and yet part of the tsunami went all the way to Sri Lanka (near India) and killed many people there. That's thousands of miles. It's a "propogating wave" and there's tremendous energy involved.

Yeah I didnt realize there need be a warning for California. There was one here in NZ (much closer) and the wave was... I dunno 2 feet?

While you are sitting and enjoying the pretty wave, please try to remember over 100 people were killed, and many of the people who did survive are now homeless.

yeah wtf? Samoa is in a state of emergency, its terrible what happened. That's like wishing you'd been in NY to see the planes crash.

Musicman408 10-01-2009 06:47 AM

Dang, I didn't realize it had been so bad!! My bad:distress: God I feel terrible- not the way to start the day, my apologies.

There was a slightly over 1-foot-amplitude swell here in Monterey Bay measured on the tide gauges. But I would not want to have been anywhere near the beach at the time, let alone in the water close to shore.

A tsunami isn't a typical wind-driven wave. A 1-foot surf wave is fun to frolic in. A 1-foot tsunami is not. Surfers ride the curls on 15-foot surf waves all the time. But a tsunami with a 15-foot runup (& no back end) just penetrated almost a mile inland in Samoa & killed more than 100 people.

You're in Monterey? I'm in Pebble Beach a few times a month for horses. That's funny!

I'm not in Monterey. But I like to track the tsunami amplitudes at various spots along the California coast where they are most prevalent, such as Monterey Bay, Los Angeles harbor, & La Jolla. It's a hobby of mine.
