Wrote a letter...

So I have written a fan letter, but i'm debating on sending it. do you think it's dumb to send fan mail to celebrities? LOL I guess i figure if it gets returned then the Marines will think i'm dumb for writing fan mail! I pretty much just said that I thought I could relate cause i get percieved a certain way and that I really enjoy her music and that I commend her for visiting my brothers and sisters in arms who are injured and hope that she continues to do so because we need more compassionate people in this life and others! And couple of other things

The best fan letters are those that criticize the object of the fanaticism. I once wrote a letter to Jacques Barzun, criticizing some of his conclusions in his then-recent book A Word Or Two Before You Go. He wrote back -- a long letter -- getting into detail on each point I made, disagreeing with many but agreeing with a few. I was thrilled.

But a fan letter that just says I LOVE YOU SO MUCH doesn't really give the recipient much to enjoy, paradoxically enough. (People like being told they are loved by intimates, not strangers.)

Some stars, or so I've heard, even get a bit creeped out by such gush.

So I would say go ahead & write your fan letter -- but say something.

Mmmh never thought of it that way and who is Jacques Barzun. The only criticism I have with Stevie Nicks is that I think that she contradicts herself on the whole Wicca (i don't say witch because there's a difference between practicing Witchcraft and practicing Wicca) thing, because I myself am a practicing Wiccan and she seems to contradict herself when she says no i'm not, but I'm not a black magic witch (ok then what does that mean exactly?), etc idk that's just what i'm picking up on. I think she's just afraid to admit it, but i'm not going to start a debate, nor will I complain about that in a letter! I think that would be rude. Idk hell i've never written a fan letter before!

That's cool that you are going to write a letter. My question is, where are you going to send the letter? Do we know where Stevie lives? And even so, does she check her own mail? Do you think she'll really get it. I hope she does though.

~GoldDustWoman~ 09-01-2009 05:38 PM

Guys i already wrote it! read my first post! I stated that I wrote it and included what I wrote! I am just debating on if I want to send it, because if it got returned it will go to my company and Marines are nosy! They'll laugh and be like hey she wrote a fan letter to a celebrity! all that bs that joining the Marines gives you confidence it's a lie! LOL Recruiters do lie! Anyway....bad mood today had a irritating day at work...

In your opinion, are good fan letters exclusively criticizing ones? Or do you think that sometimes a person can have such a specific and unique message to convey to a musician/writer/etc. that it is worth sending? Granted, much of that is based on the writer's definition of "specific and unique" in this case... but I ask because I think I have something to say, I really do.

Anyway, I think that she'd eat up the fact that you're a Marine. Send it-- I highly doubt it will get returned to you and what's the worst that can happen, you don't get a response?

LOL! True, i'd like a reply but hey if I don't get it oh well. I'm going to go send it now actually what the hell! brownie points for the Marine! Ooh-rah!

~GoldDustWoman~ 09-01-2009 07:39 PM

I sent the letter, hopefully i'll get a reply it'd be cool cause I just think that it's so admirable that she's overcome what she has and continued to strive and like i indicated in my letter i've done the same I lost both my adopted parents(when I was 16 and before going to bootcamp my dad died) but I didn't let it beat me i wanted to accomplish being the Marines and I did it. Granted I haven't done what alot of Marines, i've never deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan to be honest I am a conscientious objector I learned that after 3 years I was asked if I wanted to go to Afghanistan but I said no. Sometimes I kick myself, because I don't feel as up to par as the rest of the Marines who've gone but I won't be responsible for the death of someone else be it Marine or an enemy yet I would never want anything to happen to my brothers or sisters. But i've grown as a person, and I have learned about myself and was in Japan for two years. I'm rambling i'm gonna shut up!

But if ~GoldDustWoman~ doesn't tell Stevie how much she loves her, who will? Some graphic artist from Ann Harbor, MI?

Ghost_Tracker 09-01-2009 09:27 PM

I think one thing to keep in mind is what Lady GaGa said in between her lines in the song "Paparazzi" -

"I'm your biggest fan, I'll follow you until you love me
Papa, paparazzi
Baby, there's no other superstar, you know that I'll be
Your papa, paparazzi" - - -

Stevie doesn't do the Edge Walk to get more stuffed animals - she's got plenty of those. She does it 'cause she loves the fans, and because she loves all the
attention and the love people are trying to give her. Who wouldn't?

Point being, I have a sneaky feeling Stevie is used to receiving fan letters and wouldn't be terribly shocked or upset if she received one more. ;)

By the way, it's hard to know what to believe, of course, but I've heard that she at least makes an effort to read every single one of them. Time permitting, of course; and naturally they're "screened" by John Kinney and Karen first. But yeah, I've heard she at least tries to. Which she would only be doing if she enjoyed receiving them, of course....

And, really - it doesn't say on Nicksfix, "Don't send fan letters to Stevie" or "If you MUST send Stevie a Fan Letter..."

It says flat-out, "Fan letters may be sent to Stevie at the address below." It's an open invitation and i.m.o. it's intended to be exactly that.

gypsy4life 09-01-2009 09:38 PM

I think it's cool you sent the letter...hope she sends you a reply...that would be a once in a lifetime thing!! So, where did you send the letter? Where exactly does Stevie receive this stuff?

daniellaaarisen 09-01-2009 10:08 PM

I'm gonna write one and then probably never send it.... but I wanna write one.

The letters are submitted to the nicksfix. I would think that most fan letters that say what David mentioned about being her biggest fan and what not probably get thrown away. Letters that they feel may be of interest to Stevie probably get forwarded to a more personal address and then reviewed by her assistant Karen, or some other administrative person. If at that point they feel it warrants being shown to Stevie directly, she'll be given the letter. If a letter makes it directly to Stevie through these channels I think there is a good chance she would reply. I doubt that many letters ever do get to her though.

This is sweet. And everyone enjoys being told they're loved and that they've been a positive influence on and an inspiration to someone else. For most people that never gets old. And as for getting a response, you never know . . .

vivfox 09-01-2009 11:47 PM

In 1994 I wrote her a 64 page letter but never sent it. I re-read it once and then tossed in back in the closet again. I'm glad I never sent it. When I'm older than I am now I'll want to read it again to remember how I felt about her then.
