Smelly Cat

I was almost afraid to ask this, but here it goes:

I have a 5 yr old male cat. About 2 or 3 times a year, he gets the most awful smell coming out of his bottom. It is not poop. I think he has something wrong with his anal glands. I've seen dogs with this condition (I worked briefly at a Vets office) but never in my life have I seen a cat have it. Dogs usually rub their butts on the ground (or carpet) but I don't think cats can do that. or at least I hope not.

anyway, just want to know if anyone has had experience with this (dog or cat)
what should I do? I tried squeezing it, but needless to say he didn't like that at all.
is there something I'm doing wrong to make him have it?
should I let the Vet take care of it? ($75 to squeeze my cat's ass)

thanks for the link!

I guess I need to up his fiber and start squeezing.
so gross.
but I'm not going to put him through going to the vet and having a stranger doing it.
even though to staaaanks to high heaven

Yeah, this happened to my dog like two years ago. I think it also related to him eating whatever he could find in the back yard. But the vet took care of it, and it never happened again.

Oh, I'm pretty sure that cats can do that. Mine could. But he's been gone like 7 years now.:angel:

I hope you're joking
He is my baby...even if he stinks.
He is lucky I love him enough to "help" him with his problem.

I just thought it was a better title than "Anal Glands"

every weenie dog that i have had, except my most recent has had this problem & i had to take them every few months for "the squeeze", it's quite a site too, especially the vet tech trying to spray animal freshener on my dogs butt & in the air before we die from the smell:wavey::laugh:~
