Too young, that sucks.

Another 80's icon gone. Hopefully it was quick and painless. I'm listening to Don't You (Forget About Me) as I type. Sigh.

I'll always appreciate his take on high school life in the Chicago burbs. Ferris Bueller is my favorite:
Maitre D': You're Abe Froman? Ferris: That's right, I'm Abe Froman. Maitre D': The Sausage King of Chicago? Ferris: [caught off-guard] ... Uh yeah, that's me. Maitre D': Look, I'm very busy. Why don't you take the kids and go back to the clubhouse? Ferris: Are you suggesting that I'm not who I say I am? Maitre D': I'm suggesting that you leave before I have to get snooty. Ferris: Snooty? Maitre D': Snotty. Ferris: Snotty? |
Well, this news inspired a lot of swearing on my part. Man.
Hughes movies are endlessly quotable, and I am not ashamed to say that I can recite pretty much the entirety of Christmas Vacation by heart. There are lines from that movie that are appropriate for nearly every occasion, holiday-related or not, and I reflexively intone "That there's an RV" every time I see...well, an RV. Sigh. |

My family and I have been watching that movie every Christmas for the past 15 years. It never gets old, and there's always something that's funnier than the last time. The writing in that movie is pure genius. It's sad that such a great man has left us too early. :( |
john hughes made so many movies that i watch over & over to this day~ i was a teen in the 80's & my friends & i always went to see his latest & he always, "got" the youth of that time, but his stuff still carries over to today & i love him for that~
RIP john~ |

Breakfast Club was very pandering & kissup (considering it was coming from a writer old enough to be the characters' dad). I remember taking the one-room play concept at face value, right up to the narration:
"We were forced to serve detention ..." (OK, good concept) "... A brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, & a criminal ..." (Good, good, got that Young Adult novel vibe going) "... Because YOU, the older generation, see us that way & force us into these roles--" And that's when it's time for this viewer to head to the bar for a good, stiff drink. Still, I guess the Hughes teen-angst morality plays were generational milestones. |
