Just listened to this song for the first time, I really liked it

BellaDonna 07-25-2009 10:36 AM

Stevie complained about it in the press. She hated singing the swear word. She's never performed it live.

She really hated singing the swear word? Interesting fact. Never knew that.

I really like the song -- the lyrics are so true. "Sometimes the picture just ain't what it seems"

Jon Bon Jovi wrote it for her. Here's what she has in the liner notes of TimeSpace:

"When I first heard this song, I really did not quite understand what Jon was trying to say, but over the 2 weeks that we sang it together (at my mike), I started to realize that Jon, without knowing it, had sort of taken a time machine back 18 years and watched my life, the good parts and the bad. It was not a love song, which of course, I had expected it to be; it was much more than that to me. Bon Jovi had picked up on the fact, before meeting me, that there was no way he could know what I had lived through without having lived through it with me, so he dreamed. He dreamed about what the notorious Stevie Nicks had been like and what it had all done to her... the indulgences, the lifestyle. I felt that if he knew nothing else about me, he knew I had a strong instinct to survive. Someday, maybe all the people who did not go through this with us will understand; that considering the generation we come from, we are very lucky to be alive."

Also her record company forced her to do it. She didn't want to but they told her she needed a hit song. And then she complained later that it wasn't a hit.
Well neither was Has Anyone Ever Written AFY but she had no problem singing THAT song for a hundred years...

Has there ever been any outtakes or demos of that song? If so I would like to hear them.

I would think it's fairly obvious that she would choose her own song to sing for 100 years, over someone else's...hit or not.

I always loved SIAB, and couldn't understand why it wasn't a bigger hit, personally....also love the video...

I have never heard any demos or anything of it, other than the released track, i don't think ...

Sanne2 07-26-2009 07:21 AM

I like it, by far the best one of the new Timespace-songs.

jedw 07-26-2009 07:40 AM

Wasn't it THAT article (with all the sob stories about abortions) which alledged she didn't like somtimes its a bitch and didnt want to record it?

Im never really into songs she didn't write, with some exceptions, e.g. I quite like if i were you on the rock a little album, and maybe love off Street angel is ok.

I'd like to hear them too... if there is any.

This is one of my favs to! And let us now forget who screamed "Don't F**k with my people" at a concert...c'mon Stevie, a little swearing is ok! Plus she didn't write "Talk to Me" or "Stop Dragging" and THEY were top 10 hits!

i heard that or saw in an interview from MTV I think back in 1991 when she was promoting the timespace best of cd she didn't like the idea of saying the word Bitch after a while she liked the song.

trackaghost 07-26-2009 11:40 AM

From Vox Magazine 1991:

The determination, toughness, and pragmatism that helped her achieve success now seem elusive, but what hurts most is being pushed around by business moguls. She is smarting from the inclusion - against her wishes - of Jon Bon Jovi's song "Sometimes It's a Bitch" on Timespace.

"I was told that if I didn't do a song by Jon Bon Jovi then my career was over. I don't have any reason to hate Jon Bon Jovi. He wrote me a song that was a wonderful thing to do. I knew that just me singing it wasn't going to go over well with my fans, which it hasn't. But I was told by the industry, by management, and by everybody else that if I did NOT do this, and reach this new audience, that my career was simply, finally, completely over.

They exerted all the pressure you could possibly exert, they scared me to death. So I did the song, and is it a big hit song? No, it's not."

She found it particularly distasteful to sing the word 'bitch', which she considers a swear word. Stevie concedes that she has difficulty challenging authority figures...

If Fleetwood Mac had been told to do 'Sometimes It's A Bitch', she thinks she knows what would have happened. "Mick would have ridden in on his white horse and swept me up and told them all to go to hell and say I won't let her do it."
