Whitney covers Stevie
According to NicksLive, Whitney Houston recorded HAEWAFY and may include it on her new CD, which drops in September. Here's hoping it's on the CD!

If this is true, that would be incredible. In fact, what it would do is put a lesser known Stevie Nicks song on what has the potential to be the comeback record of the decade - with sales well over 5 million in the US alone. Moreover, if it became a single, it would be huge for La Nicks. I mean, she made several million dollars (allegedly 5) on the Dixie Chicks' Landslide alone. And, this is Whitney Houston. Finally, much like WH's cover of Dolly's also much more beautiful original (I Will Always Love You) - WH could do Stevie's song justice as this is right up her ally of shining like the sun on beautiful ballads.
This HAS to either be on the record or be leaked! |
Cha-ching!!!!
Easy Christmas money. |

Sorry. I hate to be a dissenter but if this is true I dread it. I really don't like her version of I Will Always Love You and if she brings the same histrionics to Has ASnyone Ever Written Anything For You it will ruin the song. She might not though and it might be great, but I'll be uneasy about it until I hear it.

I used to be a HUGE Whitney Houstin fan so I think this is great! However, I'm not sure this new album is going to be the amazing comeback that most people want it to be, her voice just isn't the same anymore, damaged by "habits". Anyway, I'm curious to hear what her version will sound like and bring in the cash for Stevie!

IF she does it well, this will be amazing...Whitney has a fantastic voice, and it could be an IWALY type smash...HAEWAFY certainly has the potential to be that...it will never make me forget Stevie's own version(s), just like no one can sing IWALY like Dolly can...but I still see it as a good thing...

If this is true, it would definitely be huge for Stevie, even if it never gets released as a single. I could definitely imagine Whitney injecting a gospel-y call-and-response motif into the song, especially during the bridge, where she could sell the "if not for me, then do it for the world" line for all it's worth. If nothing else, I think this would establish that Stevie (along with umpteen co-writers) can write timeless, universally appealing songs.
That being said... I also do not think Whitney's "comeback" album is going to be the force of nature that everyone is painting it out to be. The world is a much different place today than it was ten years ago when Whitney had her last hit. She's middle aged. Her bad behavior is legend. Her voice may not have withstood the ravages of abuse and neglect. Adult contemporary power ballads are no longer charting, e.g., Celine. But more than anything, the recording industry is collectively in the crapper, and anything that manages to move even 500,000 copies today would be considered a major hit. I think I would feel more confident if Whitney's comeback was being presided by someone more relevant- like Akon or even Jay-zee. But Clive Davis? N*****, puhlease. |
Whitney singing
Love to hear this. I am a fan of I will always love you, I, I think Whitney will do a good cover of HAEWAFY. The ballads really show off her beautiful voice.

This is from today's Billboard. Whitney and Clive were in London last night for a listening party... 9 tracks played (not Stevie's song). Unless the titles have been changed, only two of the 9 played match your list - not even the possible lead single is there.. Billboard Davis - who worked with Houston for the first time in 10 years on the album - stressed the album is "by no means done," while many of the songs played were still in unfinished form. "We didn't try to fit Whitney Houston into the market," Davis said. "The copyrights associated with Whitney in the 1980s and '90s are part of the fabric of music today." Nonetheless, collaborators on the album read like a who's who of contemporary pop/R&B, with songwriters and producers including Alicia Keys, Diane Warren, Stargate, R Kelly and Akon, who duets with Houston on "Like I Never Left." The tracks played were "Million Dollar Bill," "Nuthin' But Love," "Call You Tonight" (which Davis said was a likely lead single), "I Didn't Know My Own Strength," "Like I Never Left," "For the Lovers," "I Look to You," "Worth It" and a cover of Leon Russell's "A Song for You." The overall feel of the album was notably contemporary, while retaining Houston's trademark vocal flourishes. The up-tempo songs "Nuthin' But Love" and "A Song for You" received the best reaction from the invited audience of international media, while Davis particularly praised slower songs like the Warren-penned ballad "I Didn't Know My Own Strength" and R Kelly's title track, hailing Houston as "the premium balladeer of our time." |
this is exciting. I agree that I don't think this album will be what a lot of people are anticipating, but I still love Whitney's voice and I hope she recovers from the past few years' turmoil. if HAEWAFY doesn't make the cut, hopefully it will be leaked.
