Hipster Interpretation of Stevie/Tango Era
A new song by Paperplane called "Goth Star" samples (I feel like that's the wrong way of explaining it...) makes love to, "Seven Wonders".
"A Fleetwood Mac sample ("Seven Wonders") is introduced, first in tiny pieces, then building gradually into not-quite-decipherable words. The processing on Stevie Nicks' voice is simultaneously distant and intimate, setting the phrases loose in a vast echoing space but also bringing them closer. The bombastic emotion of the original vocal, even here, tweaked to an inch of its life, feels completely real. Surrounding the sample is a huge, glittery, lurching groove, basically commanding you to fall into line behind it. And it works: they're back in my head again." Check it out below. :blob1: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/11365-goth-star/ |
Thank you for posting this. I always love to hear stuff like this but rarely find it on my own. I know there are a lot of purists that wouldn't appreciate it but I think it's pretty cool that FM has obviously had some influence or piqued some interest from newer artists. Ricoh

This sounds SO cool! Thanks for sharing!

It's nice that FM is getting exposure and royalties, but that sucked! I felt like I was going to have a seizure while I was listening to that. It kind of sounded like someone's Tango in the Night cassette got wet.

^ Same here. It reminded me of a film we watched in history recently about the end of the 2nd ww where the German national hymn was played very choppy to demostrate that Germany was on the very end.

Part of me likes it, part of me is reminded of when I used to jump up and down in front of my CD player when I was little and the CD used to skip like mad. I think it's creative to say the least, but also like a bad LSD trip.

Thank you for posting. I actually think it's rather lovely. By deconstructing Seven Wonders, the song makes me hyper-aware of how pleasurable is the original. Not quite sublime, but its aim is true. And I like the writing on the blog. We SHOULD march to this song.

1. PICTUREPLANE "Goth Star" Constructed around a heavily manipulated keyboard-and-Stevie Nicks-vocal sample from Fleetwood Mac's "Seven Wonders," this tiny gem will either inspire a re-evaluation of that venerable pop band or render their original recording virtually unlistenable. Either way, it chalks up at least one hallmark of an artistically worthy cover version. (From Dark Rift, prettymuchamazing.com/mp3/pictureplane-goth-star) [email protected] |

I hear a lot of Stevie in this guy (which doesn't happen often). His name is Paolo Nutini. Check out this video, I believe he was 19 at the time. It's definitely the voice and delivery that subtly remind me of early Stevie. Also the songwriting in a certain way. I don't know, either way it's much more enjoyable than the Pictureplane song. |
I think the effect is amazing!! your head tries to collect all the pieces of the song and give them an order, so your mind recalls the original song over and over...
And you go straight to play FM version!! I love it! |
