LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM CREDITS HAPPY FAMILY LIFE FOR ENJOYING THE ROAD

5/19/2009

Lindsey Buckingham says that having an active family life has greatly relieved the strain of hitting the road with Fleetwood Mac. Whereas touring was a long and tortuous process for Buckingham throughout the '70s and '80s, he credits his current happiness to his wife and kids.

Buckingham, who is legendary for his high-strung attitude and musical perfectionism, says that over the past decade marrying and raising three children has put everything into perspective, telling The San Francisco Gate, "It's certainly put a balance on everything. It's made it easier to enjoy what I'm doing now. It probably helped that I did a couple of solo albums and got some touring out of the way. You hit a point where a lot of things that you thought would push your buttons don't really push your buttons anymore. That's why this tour is going so smoothly. Nothing has really been bothering me."

Buckingham was asked if the move into becoming a father immediately took precedence over his music, or whether it was a gradual process that he had to adjust to: "I found myself in the situation before I was fully acclimated to it, I think, y'know? It just . . . It didn't sink in right away because old patterns do die hard. I can't say that I remember a particular moment, but I do know that one of the great joys and comforts of being a father in particular -- and a spouse as well -- is that you sort of have this biological imperative that you know that you would put them first in any situation."

Fleetwood Mac perform tomorrow night (May 20th) in Oakland, California at Oracle Arena. The band will be on the road through the end of June.

Lindsey has three rug-rats. Do they like their old man's music, or do they think he's impossibly uncool?

The reason I ask is that I do strongly believe that Lindsey's wife has absolutely no musical interest in Fleetwood Mac.

Why do you think she has no interest? If she sits with him snuggling and crying over Bob Dylan and structures and writes his songs, I think she probably has had some interest in Fleetwood Mac.

Lindsey has claimed that his kids like Tusk type music. However, I believe he was lying. Mainly because I think that Lee Lee was about 5 at the time and the youngest had barely been weaned. I doubt she was rhapsodizing about the merit of That's All for Everyone, while teething. He also said that Will was more into game cube than guitars.

Since then, in one of his video clips Lindsey said that Will heard the song Tusk and told his dad that it is different on the record than it is when Lindsey performs it live. Lindsey appreciated this observation and remarked that Will was a very thoughtful boy. Later that day, when Lindsey passed by Will's room, he noticed that Will was actually playing Tusk. So . . . I believe that Lindsey thinks that his children do share his taste in music and are brilliant.

Guess I was the only one...

They cry over Dylan? That's kind of cute. I wonder what song...myself, personally, it could be just about anything on Blood on the Tracks. For some reason...

But who really makes me cry is Verdi. Anything. And it's not even slight, weepy tears. We're talking full-blown. In fact, most Italian opera hits my emotional chords pretty hard. But especially Verdi.

Michele, you're totally cool and I adore reading your posts, but I think we'll have to agree to disagree on just how much Kristen Buckingham has to do with actually writing LB's songs. Like, I know Lindsey said she structured the verses of his song or wrote lyrics, but I'm thinking more along she just told him his song was a little too wordy and probably threw in a few synonyms or adjectives when he misplaced his pocket dictionary (of which I am sure the man carries around for many of these strange, overly-cerebral quotes he is known to give). I don't think Kristen made any dramatic impact to the songs she supposedly "co-wrote."

Why do I feel this? Well, she said it herself in one of those interior design interviews she gives. He doesn't decorate and she isn't musically inclined. Like a great husband, LB just wanted to spotlight and give (over zealous) props to his wife. And she probably deserves it for putting up with his cranky, reclusive rear for all these years.:xoxo:

As for the kids...I think Leelee is probably into pop, William hip-hop, and Stella a rocker. She looks like one anyway. But I could be wrong and she may be into the Hannah Montana and Leelee the...rock, er, whatever is equivalent to child rock music...Fall Out Boy? I remember her cute little head-banging on LB's live dvd doc. That was pure. Has to be in the genes. ;)

Seeing as how Lindsey gave Will songwriting credit for saying the words "great day" I would have to agree with you.

As for the Elle Decor interview, I thought about that regarding David's comment. Kristen went out of her way to talk about Greg's achievements, which happened when Kristen was a baby herself. That showed me that she takes an interest in things Lindsey cares about. So, whatever her true musical tastes are, I'm pretty confident that when Lindsey wants to talk to her about Fleetwood Mac, she is all ears and is knowledgeable and supportive on the subject for her.

That also reminds me of Carol Ann talking about how she took one of the few pictures she could find of Lindsey's dad, copied and framed it and gave it as a gift not only to him, but his brothers too. Have you ever done anything that thoughtful David? But Carol didn't think Lindsey's mom liked her too much!

Nico, I remember Lindsey saying that Lee Lee was good on the piano, I believe. That was very cute on the DVD where she just banged until music came out.

Well, maybe she has a little interest, only because her husband is the leader of the group. But if he weren't in the band, she probably couldn't care less. It's just a vibe I have about her.

What does your vibe say? Sinatra? Haydn? Snoop Dog?
