The Second Time
 

I know that "The Second Time" doesn't get a lot of comment from the mob, but is there a more beautifully delicate, ultimately heartbreaking ballad on any Fleetwood Mac album?

What the hell is this song about?

It is an exceptional song. I have always loved it the minute I heard it. It's definitely in my top 10 FM/Stevie song list. I"ve said this before but I think it would be amazing live!! The audience may not be familiar with it at first, but I'm sure they would grow to love it...."she could never look back..."

Ahh. No wonder. I never listen to that album. Although I do like "Affairs of the Heart"

I absolutely LOVE this song and always have...... I remember it being discussed a while back though and there were a lot of haters for the song so I'm surprised so many are saying they love it........... :woohoo:

I think this song misses the mark by just a few inches. For some reason I always get caught up on the awkward/clumsy phrasing of "...that woman used to, uh... Hollywood living..." And there are too many of those "dream-feeling-memory" phrases mashed together to make any sense. But what finally kills it for me is when the cheesy synth comes in after the second chorus. Otherwise, it's a heartfelt, moving song. Perhaps this is one of those instances where Lindsey would have been able to shape Stevie's raw material into perfection.

I think Vito wrote the chord progression, which is what makes it so beautiful to me. Nothing spectacular in that department, but a nice progression incorporating a dominant 7. It used to be bittersweet, but now it's just sweet.

I'm glad to finally see some people posting positive things about this song. I think it's a great work of art the way I think When I See You Again is a great work of art. Both songs are about hitting bottom, total heartbreak, etc... and you can tell in the way Stevie sang them and in the way they were arranged and produced, that Stevie was HURTING. They're tremendous snapshots of defining moments in time in her career... even if they aren't necessarily easy pills to swallow. I agree the Second Time would definitely shine much brighter live than it ever would in it's studio version.

Regarding what it's about: I suspect it's about her hitting the reset button with Fleetwood Mac following Lindsey's dramatic departure in 1987. And that's why I love the song... when you view it's context... it's kinda sad and heartbreaking. Much like When I See You Again is.
