brags...

Here are some pictures of my latest dog show wins!

This is Jessarae's Music To My Ears OA OAJ, aka DJ. This was in Lexington, Kentucky over Labor Day weekend. DJ is one of my breedings...my first breeding. Also competes in agility and has his open titles, OA (Open Agility) and OAJ (Open Agility Jumper). He now has 13/15 points with both majors to finish his AKC championship!

This is Rhiannon, DJ's mother. Haremet's Imperial Blue AX AXJ CGC. she has 7/15 points to her AKC championship. Her biggest interest is agility and has her AX (Agility Excellence) and AXJ (Agility Excellent Jumper) titles and is now working on her MACH (Master Agility Champion) and Masters titles (MX and MXJ). She has 53/750 MACH points.
This picture was also from Labor Day weekend in Lexington.

I hate this picture of me!!! Rhiannon looks pretty though. This was the week after Labor Day. I hadn't shown her in over a year and her first two weekends out she has won them both! She has been soooooooooo slow to mature and two litter of two puppies has really matured her. At 5 and 1/2 she's finally getting more points!

I Love this picture of you. Of the 3 this is my favorite. I love the way your hair falls over your shoulder. Rhiannon is a beautiful lady too.

Is it me, or does the judge here look like a clown? Her face is white! Weird.

Ever seen the movie "Best In Show"? =)

 I think it's the lighting. A lot of show pictures turn out that way. They are blinding bright with a dark background.

Yeah I have seen Best In Show. I think it's a stupid movie, but then again it's not really my type of movie. I like chick flicks. :D It was overly exaggerated. You get your weirdos every now and then, just not quite like that!
I heard that they used actual show dogs in this movie and it was hard to train them to be "bad" in the ring because the dogs thought they were showing and they were trained not to be bad.

Kinda looks like Elizabeth Taylor from Sex and The City....

I think parts of Best In Show are really funny. Especially the guy with the hound
dog. Also from basically the same cast/writers, Waiting For Guffman and A Mighty
Wind, those really crack me up.

I hate to admit it but I like some chick flicks....... I said some.

Jessica did you see Message In A Bottle? That's a good chick flick.

I love You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. Also, the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice and Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility.

You've Got Mail and Sleepless In Seattle are some of my favorites! Haven't seen Message In A Bottle though.

There are some funny parts to Best In Show. The guy with the bloodhound was really funny! The funniest thing that happened after a show once was when I was in Columbus a few years ago, and toy poodles showed in the same ring after the papillons, and when you are at a show, a male dog is a Dog and a female dog is a Bitch. That's just the proper way of saying it. Well some guy that was standing next to me was talking to a friend of his about going in the ring, and he said, "quick...grab my bitch!" And I have laughed for the past 3 years over that every time I go to that show!

POODLE FACT:
Poodles are NOT French, they are German hunting dogs. Poodle comes from the word puddle. Why do the show poodles have such an "ugly" haircut??? The hair over the chest, on the head and ears is to keep the main organs warm as well as the ears and head. the puffs around the wrists are to keep the pulse warm. The puffs on the hips are to keep the kidneys warm. And the puff at the end of the tail, is a flag to alert the hunter when something is found.

CharmedHour,

Your puppies are pretty!

Here is a dumb question I've always wanted to ask a dog show person but never had the chance to - why are the dogs named that way? How do you go about picking the name for a show dog?

I love dogs, but I've always named my dogs things like...Snert. Show dog names are intriguing to me.

That's not a dumb question at all. Show dog breeders have what you call a "kennel name". I can be something that means something to you, like your first dog's name or even just your street name. My kennel name is "Jessarae" I got it from my first name, Jessica and my middle name, Rae. A friend of mine who also breeds papillons got her kennel name from her first name and her husbands first name. Nana and Kenny "Nanken Papillons". Another pap breeder friend used her last name, "Domino".
When naming a dog, you use your kennel name and the rest of the name up to 28 letters can be anything. My first papillon's name is champion, Wingazen A Dare For Jessarae. I got him from my friend Carol, who has the kennel name of Wingazen. She put my kennel name at the end because we both own the dog. A lot of breeders will do that if they co-own dogs or co-breed dogs. If you are the breeder of the dog, you name it and put your kennel name on it. The dogs that I have breed are:

Jessarae's Music To My Ears aka DJ
Jessarae's Just A Wish aka Gypsy
Jessarae's Celebrity Cruise aka Quest
Jessarae's Cruise Control aka Helio (owned by my friend and agility mentor)

I got DJ's name from his sire champion, Wingazen I Am All Ears and from his dam, Rhiannon Haremet's Imperial Blue. His sire being "I Am All Ears" and "Rhiannon" being my favorite song, I got "Music To My Ears". Gypsy's name, I'm sure you can figure that one out! Quest and Helio are litter mates and their sire is champion, Joco's Moonlight Cruise (bred by Joco papillons). "Celebrity Cruise" is a cruise line company and "Quest" is a Celebrity Cruise ship.

DJ and Gypsy's grandfather (father's father) has a story behind his name. He was bred by my friend Carol (Wingazen papillons). Anyway another friend of our's, Jackie, convinced Carol that if she bred Tessa to Wizard, they could possibly get phalenes (drop eared papillons). Carol swore up and down that Tessa was not a phalene producer. After Data was born (Gypsy and DJ's grandfather) they thought his ears were going to drop but they never did and he stayed a papillon. So Jackie took the puppy and Carol said she could name him what she wanted as long as she used Carol's kennel name. So Jackie also put her kennel name (Dewdrop) in it too. She sent in the AKC papers and Carol got her copy in the mail and right in bold print it said: WINGAZEN DAMIFDEY DEWDROP

That's brilliant, made me laugh out loud, startled my son awake.

Thank you for taking the time to explain it. Makes much more sense now - I like how all those names you mentioned follow some kind of map to make, even if it's obscure, like the cruise ship one. Since I didn't know better before, I thought they were mostly just random words stuck together, but now I see how clever it actually is.

The next dog I get shall be named Pliers.

CharmedHour 09-29-2008 07:32 PM

My friend who also breeds papillons said, if she owned a Japanese Chin she would name it "Not By The Hair".
