PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk

WATERBURY, Vt. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.

PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk

PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

"We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child," said a spokesperson for Ben and Jerry's.

LOL.
I read that article last night and all I took away from it was that PETA is really, really weird.

I know. They are pretty militant in their stance and I admire that. The human milk thing would be a nightmare though. How would you know what's in the milk with everyone's habits? I'm curious as to how they would address that.

PETA is nuts. Although this was likely just for publicity. Are we really that horrible to our cows? I think Ben and Jerry's at least doesn't do unnatural things to their cows. Occasional ice cream isn't going to hurt anyone. If you make a choice not to eat dairy that's good but I don't think people should be feeling guilty for having dairy!

I can't stand those PETA bastards! I breed and show papillons and PETA sometimes protests at shows. One time at an agility trial in Columbus, PETA put antifreeze in a dog's water bowl, and said "a dead dog was better than a caged dog."
In Louisville Kentucky, there is a huge 4 day show there, and they have to have gaurds at every gate and door because of PETA. Also when I was at a show in Akron Ohio, PETA stole a van with some woman's dogs in it, drove it down the road and set it on fire. Needless to say it killed the dogs.
The president of PETA and the president of the Humane Society Of The United States (HSUS) have both said they would love to see ann end to all companion animals. :distress:

Meanwhile the amount of love most owners have for their show dogs is incredible. Murdering the dogs for a twisted cause is horrible. I'm sure those are fringies though. God I would hope so, all groups are going to have their crazies.

That's disgusting. Not gonna happen.

Yes, I'm sure it's an attempt to draw attention to their cause. It worked for me... This was my thought process, and maybe it was just what they are going for:

1. Has to be a joke.
2. How gross and ridiculous.
3. Besides, they could never get that much milk from women.
4. They'd have to have factories with rows of women sitting with their breast pumps, pumping all day long. How demeaning. No one would want to do that.
5. Hmm, we do that with cows. Cows probably wouldn't do it either if they had a choice.
6. Well, okay. I guess where they're coming from, but I will still drink cows' milk that comes from the most humane source possible.

True, the extreme animal rights people are nuts. Just like extremists of any view, really. Did anyone see the reports that Pamela Anderson's claimed she didn't know her Uggs are made of animal products? Give me a break.

Oh man, that's hilarious. I am reminded of the time I had a minor (okay, closer to major, but whatever) nervous breakdown shortly after the birth of my son - he was a fussy baby and apparently considered me his human pacifier, because he wanted to nurse constantly and flipped a grip if I tried to lay him down somewhere.

So I went out and got a breast pump, thinking it would be a simple way to give the kiddo a bottle without having to have the rest of my dead carcass constantly attached to it, but it didn't work out like that. Not one bit.

The actual end result was that the damn thing didn't like me at all and just didn't work, and this left me sitting on my bed one evening with the pump accomplishing nothing more strenuous than humming merrily along like a very loud Hoover as I sobbed uncontrollably and apologized to Bessie the Cow for attaching similar devices to her just because I have a deep affection for Cinnamon Life.

Doing it to feed my child was harrowing enough without having to also supply America with the dairy portion of its Chunky Monkey.

And Bessie, if you're reading this...even though it's been 8 years, I'm still sorry. :sorry:

Oh yeah - and PETA are lunatics. The murdering of the dog is right up there with their ridiculous "Holocaust on Your Plate" campaign wherein they displayed photos of Jews in concentration camps alongside photos of chickens in slaughterhouses, as if these two things are somehow equal. Disgusting.

PETA = clueless

PETA takes issue with “Slaughterville" Oklahoma

That name was the subject of controversy in 2004 when People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) asked Slaughterville administrator Marsha Blair to rename the town.

“I am writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, our 800,000 members and supporters, and other compassionate Americans to ask Slaughterville to change its name — which conjures up images of the violent and bloody deaths of terrified chickens, pigs and cows — to Veggieville, a friendly name honoring a heart-healthy and compassionate alternative to animal corpses,” the letter said. PETA promised to donate $20,000 in veggie burgers to the town school district. However, the town does not have a school district all its own.

Members of Slaughterville's town council amicably heard presentations by members of PETA before voting against the suggestion. More than a dozen people at the standing room only meeting offered opinions on why the town should keep its name. Even with negotiations of stray animal shelters, or a spay/neuter program for low-income Slaughterville residents, the town still rejected the request. PETA, in effort to win the town over, gave away free veggie burgers and information about the vegan lifestyle before the town council meeting. The citizens of Slaughterville voiced their opinion by serving free hot dogs and brandishing signs that read, “Beef: it's what's for dinner.”

Of course Slaughterville, OK was named after a grocery store run by James Slaughter in the early 20th century.
