Tour Cover Song Question

when an artist does a cover song on a tour, does the tour artist pay rite's and royalties to the covered artist??? and if so, how much?

I'm just wondering if and how much Stevie pays to do all her covers???

Great question! Never really thought about it. I'm thinking that some kind of compensation would be payed to the original artist, especially when it comes to "big time" national concerts. Now whether it's the artist performing the song or someone involved in the organization of the event is a different question. But think about how many cover songs are done across the world every night in bars, clubs, and the like that charge people admission prices. How would anyone keep track of all that?

I used to be in a band that played Fleetwood Mac songs. Wherever we played -- clubs, casinos, open-air concerts -- that venue payed an annual fee to ASCAP & BMI, & that took care of everything.

those darn bar bands have been pirating for years way before the Internet...:blob2:

I know if you play a song on a tv show after like 30 seconds you have to pay a royalty fee or something

so I'm looking for someone who knows exactly how that works!!!...

It's a fixed expense for the concert promoter that (for larger shows, like most of Stevie's are) is based on a formula involving the number of tickets sold & the corresponding royalty rate for the relevant publishing entities (ASCAP/BMI for USA, and CESAC for Canada) . The songs that the act chooses to play are completely irrelevant.
