Hollywood, Fl Review

I'm experiencing a post Stevie high and wanted to share some of the highlights from last night's show with everyone. First off, I've never heard Stevie sound so good, vocally she was at the top of her game. I didn't read any reviews of Bilox's show so I would be surprised IF there were any changes to the set list. I was thrilled to hear her open with Outside the Rain as I love this song and never really cared for Stand Back as an opener. The set list was the same as Biloxi, but the order was different from the lists I've seen posted. This was my first time hearing Crash and I must say I really liked it. When she introduced her Bob Seger cover, I couldn't beleive she was doing ANOTHER cover but it really rocked!! Perfect song for Stevie and I had never heard that song before. I must say I think Stevie could do a full show of cover songs and be quite content. Still of the Night was superb. She let out this wail midsong that shook the rafters! Amazing. Though I'm tired of Gold Dust Woman, it sounded great last night, especially the intro. Very powerful. Edge was also amazing. Everyone was totally into it and you could feel the energy of the entire crowd just move with that song. I was expecting Beauty and the Beast to be the final encore so Has Anyone Ever Written was a nice surprise. This song was without a doubt the best song of the night. Stevie came out in her white Edge dress and gorgeous ivory tux jacket. The video imagery of the troops behind her brought me to tears. She ended the song with "I thought that there was a connection", something she hasn't done in quite a while. It was pure magic.

Stevie Nicks' visions still crystal clear in concert

Stevie Nicks proved 60 is the new 30, as the rock legend nearly sold out Hard Rock Live near Hollywood Saturday night -- just a year or so after her last appearance at the 5,000-plus seat venue -- with a hit-packed, lively set that found her in good voice and reinforced her stature as a rock and roll original.

Nicks might not move on stage with the gale force drive she tapped into in the Bicentennial year but who, aside from Mick Jagger, still can? Nicks is probably the only performer who can earn a standing ovation for merely twirling on stage, as she did during her third number, Stand Back. But given her familiar songs to draw upon, from a solo career and from her ongoing Fleetwood Mac catalog, and a distinctive voice that's grown richer over time, Nicks plays to full houses because she can. Saturday, she didn't take that blessing for granted. She sounded engaged, delivered all the expected favorites such as Dreams, Stand Back and Rhiannon with clarity and purpose, offered a rarely performed album cut (a mesmerizing How Still My Love, from 1981's Bella Donna) and threw in a few remakes.

Her audience ranged from a 10-year-old who was enjoying her first concert with her mom, to some overheated dude in the rafters who couldn't stop yelling, ''I love you Stevie!'' for most of the 105-minute show.

Still others were here to share memories (and we could hear some of their stories because South Florida audiences just can't watch an event without providing a running commentary of their own): There's the first car they drove when, on its AM radio, they heard Nicks sing Rhiannon 33 years ago. Or the time they had big hair in the '80s when Nicks initially sang about a life lived on the Edge of Seventeen.

None of these fans' recollections were quite as musical or endearing as the star's own tales from the stage. In introducing If Anyone Falls, Nicks, whose band features sister-in-law Lori Perry Nicks on harmonies, told how she wrote the 1983 hit after one of her single friends tossed out a hopeful line, ``if anyone falls in love I hope it's one of us.''

''I thought that was such a good phrase I went home and wrote that song,'' Nicks said. Sorcerer, she explained, came about in the interim between the commercial failure of her duo album with ex-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham in 1973 and the pair's joining of Fleetwood Mac on New Year's Eve 1975. A tender Landslide movingly featured a video montage of her father Jess Nicks who died in 2005.

There weren't any major surprises in Nicks' set list. She's opened many of her solo tours with Outside the Rain since her first in 1981 and it was in lead position again. A convincing cover of Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll is now a regular encore. Of the two new additions -- Bob Seger's rollicking Face the Promise and Dave Matthews' acoustic Crash -- only the latter cover proved ill-advised despite Nicks' insistence she could sing a male song. She can. But her otherwise exceptional band, led by veteran guitarist/musical director Waddy Wachtel, ran ramshod over its slight melody. When Nicks charitably introduced Crash by saying 'it's the most fun I've had in 10 years,' our first thought was that she needs to get out more.

The uninspired computer-generated effects on a video screen also disappointed but some new tweaks, like a brief electronic keyboard pulse in the bridge of the rocker Fall From Grace, kept her music fresh and stylish. Overall, Nicks delivered a crowd pleaser that sets her up well for her next challenge: a proposed 2009 tour with Fleetwood Mac.

Sort of. She moved down the stage quickly and shook a few hands but it was not proper Edge walk by any means. I think the the front row may have been too far from the stage?? I thought for a second that there was going to be a Gold Dust walk. During Gold Dust Woman people started to rush the stage for no apparent reason. It was bizarre. Security quickly put an end to that.

I was just about to post that!!! This guy needs to seriously seek some help immediately and stop posting. He should also stop stalking Stevie fans Myspace pages (hint hint).

As for the show, I'm going to write this review. Now I will say this, my fandom is no longer what it used to be. Anyone who has been on these boards long enough will know that before I had no issues what-so-ever about traveling to see multiple Stevie shows. However the unchanging setlist was really getting to me. Last night, however, I actually left extremely 100% impressed and reinvigorated in my love for Stevie. As stated above, the setlist was basically the same as Biloxi...

Outside the Rain/Dreams
Stand Back
If Anyone falls
Crash
Rhiannon
Sorcerer
Face the Promise
Gold Dust Woman
Fall From Grace
Landslide
How Still My Love
Edge of Seventeen
Rock and Roll
HAEWAFY

Face the Promise rocked!!!! I was quite pessimistic about hearing a new cover in the set, but this one was great! Stevie was totally getting into it!

Some other tidbits...

Stevie complained and accused Waddy during the band intros of sabotaging the night by tangling her mic strands!! LMAO!! At some point during the night Stevie had tangled the strands all up in a bunch so she couldn't run her fingers through them. Every time she'd pick up the strands, up would follow this big old bunch of knotted strands! It was pretty funny and quite amusing how "annoyed" she was by it.

Im loving these new upper-register notes she seems to be trying to hit. The whole night I kept on looking at my friend and saying, "where in he hell did THAT note come from?!"

Overall it was a great night, and I also agree with Howard Cohen's review that this sets the bar high for FM 2009. I hope she delivers the way she delivered last night!

Seems if anything these days, Stevie is more vocally in control than she ever has been.

Stevie's actually sold me on Bob Seger's Face The Promise cd. If she can't push her own music on this tour, at least she's selling her fellow rockers' stuff!

Chills, I can't wait.

A lot of emotions going on last night. Glad you had a good time! Thanks for the review!

 I picked out my favorite parts. Good review!

ARRGHH I AM GETTING EXCITED!!! My show is next week, and we leave tomorrow, so things are getting pretty serious. ha ha ha. Honestly I can't wait, and I have noticed some high notes. There used to be this vid of If Anyone Falls on youtube from later this year where she does a whole line with a high note, but I think the video was taken down as I can no longer find it....

But yeah, I am very excited!!

Much Love,
Ethan

Too funny. Wouldn't you love to see the "to do" list for the crew. I can guarantee that the task of untangling Stevie's mic strands figures prominently on the checklist.

Why is that your "favorite part"? Because it's inaccurate?

See, you try to outfox me & you will never succeed. I am smarter than the year is long.

It was just ONE of my favorite parts. It's true, I boldfaced it to get your attention. And hey, it worked! Would you say it's accurate enough that it is performed infrequently enough that lifelong fans like myself and this reviewer have never or rarely seen it? If you think about it, the song was only performed regularly on tour in the 80s(20 YRS AGO) and the last year or so.

I'm smart enough to know that I could never do that. You're just zany enough to make it fun to banter back and forth with is all. I truly admire your vast knowledge of Stevie and the Mac. Most, if not all, pale in comparison. It's more a difference of opinion, as are most things discussed on this board. :wavey:

David my friend, dont give this terrorist the attention he so desperately craves. The best way to deal with these creeps is to ignore them completely.

You are absolutely right, I feel.

People on the Chain forum are beginning to say that I'm beyond zany, & that I've moved into the realm of "disturbing." I hope this isn't true but I fear it might be. Plus, Strand is terrifying me, too. He fills my PM inbox with anti-Beethoven screeds. This makes my blood boil & fills my heart with rage. But he's still fun.

I love tweaking people. Michele, who runs this place now, knows me from waaaay back, & I used to tweak her nose on other forums. She would get so exasperated that she'd black out or something. :(
I just hope they stop talking about me negatively on the other forum. That's so embarrassing.

I've actually only ever been on one other forum -- well, one other FM forum -- and you weren't really there. But it is nice to meet you.
