Re-recording DON'T STOP for the Inaugural
 

Remember Christine's saying that the band recorded something or other for the 1993 performance in Landover? She never really specified, & no one else in the band did, either. What do you think she was talking about? I think that their performance was not quite so "live" as it was thought to be, & that the foundation of the sound was what was recorded beforehand.

Look carefully at the video. Is Lindsey, for example, playing all the riffs you hear? There's no cord on his ax. How about John? Christine's piano, too, seems prerecorded.

What of the vocals? A mix of live & Memorex, is my guess.

I agree about the playing live stuff... Lindsey was the most obvious, it didn't look like he was playing at all. Stevie said her tambo had been taped down too.

I do remember hearing something about them re-recording Don't Stop, but I always assumed it never happened, cause the single they re-released was of the old track wasn't it? Maybe you're right about them pre-recording the live stuff.

I agree. However, they did not sound that good. You'd think if it was recorded, they would have made it sound good.



Also, La Nicks said in 94 on Letterman that she was trying to sing when trying to say she was "really sorry Bill" after handing Pres. Clinton the deadened tambo.

I'm referring to the instrumental. I think that's largely what was prerecorded. The vocals seem mostly live right there on the stage.

I'm still trying to figure out who is actually playing what on the stage vs. who is "air-guitaring" it. I really think Chris, for example, is not playing what I hear of the piano (or the phat pad, for that matter). In addition, what I hear of the piano in the sound field doesn't sound like a live mix; it sounds like a studio mix. She's only moving her fingers atop a dead board. One proof: You hear a glissando at around 2:30 but Chris isn't shown playing one.

But what are Lindsey & John doing? No cords are visible. That probably means something. But I need you guitarists to look closely.

I think Lindsey is miming it as well. I think his guitar tone sounds too "studio" and there are points where, to me, he doesn't look quite like he's playing what we're hearing. I think it's safe to say that if Christine was playing to a backing track then so was Lindsey. If he is playing it live then it's one of his cleaner versions of that song other than on The Dance.

I think the vocals are all live or else they'd have got them better sounding than that.

I see a cord on the Turner, down by the knobs. Look after the first chorus. Mick's clearly live. They never really focus on John. The vocals are too terrible to not be live. As for "other" instrumentation, I wouldn't be shocked if there was another keyboardist playing under that platform. It could be Memorex, but it's just too...not good, IMO.

I believe this is true. There is even a Dance-era interview around where John admitted that the inaugural "Don't Stop" wasn't really live.

I know they used tracks for SYW and for LB's Soundstage. I met the guys who were pushing the buttons to make them play. So, I am sure they had tracks for DS. I wonder why they did that though. It is not as if they could not, as CM said play that song "with one hand tied behind her back." It is all very strange.

I don't know if it was recorded but Christine looks BEAUTIFUL. It's the first time I see this video complete.
But what the hell MJ was doing there?? I used to like him, but in 1993 he was becoming the freak he is now. And joining him with Fleetwood Mac. humm. no no!
I can see Little Richard and Warren Beatty too. Sure there were more celebrities.

But Michael Jackson singing with Fleetwood Mac?? NOOOOO

The vocals are definitely live. Lindsay looks like he is playing air guitar. You can barely see John.

I guess for me the big question is why. Most people lip synch and play the instruments live not the other way around.

Lindsey IS amp-ed up...that was back when his old Turners had the output jack on the front near the volume/tone knobs. I can make it out clearly in the video more than once.

I recorded this live, and watching it made me sick deep down inside. This is Stevie at her worst. I got the news paper the next day because the Mac was on the front cover. Even though I'd seen her on TV the night before, I couldn't believe how bad she looked in the photo. I'm so glad she turned her life around.

AND - despite the sleeves, she is not that fat. In fact, she was fatter on the SYW tour :shrug:
