The Rose

So I just watched The Rose starring Bette Midler a couple of days ago. I had never seen it before, but I finally recorded it when it came on one of the movie channels. It was such a brilliant film. I have already watched it 3 times. I just love the energy Bette Midler put into that character. Those musical numbers in the film were outrageous and crazy! Are there any fans of this film that would like to discuss their views?

It is up there on my list. She really seemingly embodies the time period and the life to a T. What a great movie.

I know it's supposed to be loosely based on Janis Joplin's story, but I say that's very loosely. I can't wait for that long anticipated movie of Janis to finally be made.

That aside, I have to say I love The Rose. Bette Midler = awesome.

When she sings "Stay With Me" - it is flim making and passion at their best.

I like those scenes shot at night when she gets in & out of the limousine, on a rain-slicked street. She looks totally like Tusk-era Stevie Nicks.

I never saw the movie. How does it differ from Joplin?

Her hair was different. She was sporting a tight, shoulder length perm.

Best line in the movie:

Counter man in diner: "We don't serve hippies here"
Rose: "Yeah? well we don't eat 'em either"

She was totally Stevie Nicks, wasn't she? :wavey:

A lot of people think that the director Mark Rydell was related to Rydell High School in GREASE. But that's not true.

.

Yup. It's the same exact hair that Stevie had on the 'FM Live' album insert, the black and white portrait where her head is slightly cocked to one side.

Love the movie. Bette is such a talented perfomer.

I recently saw Bette Midler's new show at the Coloseum. She sang the song The Rose and as she introduced it, she said something like "This is a song that people always want to try to sing a long to - please don't (laughs). She said you can all light up your cell phones and wave them back and forth to the music." And low and behold about half way through the song I turn around and I see hundreds of lit up cell phones swaying back and forth and I just started giggling. It is a very pretty song.

Her show at Caesars was great by the way.

Oh, also Stevie related - Taku is playing percussion in her show and I noticed in her credits that Kim Brakely is doing her costuming/wardrobe for the show.

Kim Brakely lives in a world of cloth, velvet, satin, & chiffon.

But who is the REAL Kim? the flesh & blood woman behind the legend?

The legend that. Is. Kim. Brakely.

I saw this flick w my father in the theater when it came out. I thought it was very moving and that Bette gave a powerful performance! Sad, though. I know it was loosely based on the life and times of Janis Joplin, which made it ever sadder knowing how things turned out for her. A great film, though.

The costumes look very Stevie. I love the movie.

I love this movie, despite what a downer it is. The music is great, as are the mannerisms she put into that character. Mmm that sass! I could have done without the hairy pits and the lack of a bra...but I digress. That **** was all the rage for those rockin' hippie gals, right? Now, how about my favorite quote!

(The Rose to a bandmember)
"Look...I want you to have this. It's a stopwatch, okay? I got 30 minutes of good singin' in me tonight, so the moment I start to sing you hit that watch and don't you let me go past 30 minutes! Or you'll hear from me mutha****aaa!"
