Any thoughts on the last movie you watched?

LAWN DOGS (1997)

Atrocious. The screenplay is like something dredged up from the imaginations of drunken college freshmen majoring in creative writing. There's no coherent theme or style or tone, & the actors are uniformly rotten. Mischa Barton, who plays the precocious, misunderstood 10-year-old, obviously had no more ability at that age than she does now. Sam Rockwell plays the loner nonconformist gardener, who achieves Zen while mowing lawns. Christopher McDonald rises to his usual level, which in this instance gives us a bird's eye view of the weeds. Kathleen Quinlan is completely wasted.

Everyone in the upscale suburb talks with a sneer or one of those community theater southern twangs, even though the story appears to take place in the midwest. Along the way, a couple of animals are killed, but there appears to be a look of gratitude on their faces. They must have known they had better roles ahead of them. The young girl gets upset & runs across the prairie in medium & long shot, like an Andrew Wyeth painting.

Not much else happens, except that some of the characters bed down with one another's spouses, & during a block barbecue some sort of point is feebly made about class distinctions & hypocrisy -- the usual student film claptrap. In fact, the whole thing feels like a senior thesis. None of the inhabitants of this seething suburb does or says anything that resembles any word or deed that has ever been said or done anywhere on earth. At one point, the Alannah Myles song "Black Velvet" plays on the radio in some guy's pickup, & it's the truest thing in the movie, which should give you an idea.

My verdict = AVOID

The last was "The Other Boleyn Girl". The next will "21" about the MIT students that took Las Vegas.

Maurice (1987)

I love Merchant Ivory films and I love E.M. Forster. I think this was a good production. It ran a little long, but it was good quality.]

I watch Age of Innocence later the evening. It is in my top 5 films and I watch it at least two times a year. I think the cinematography is fantastic and is heavily influenced by D.W. Griffith. Sadly, neither of the Gish sisters was available to perform in it.

Is that Will Smith? I always thought that it might be a bit of a heavy subject to watch. Having said that, our last DVD movie was Elizabeth-Golden Age ( heavy subject for others I expect :)) but I do admit, it's what the Brits really do best.(unlike the current T5 chaos).....costume drama and plenty of it.

Yes Will Smith. And you should watch it. Brought a lump to my throat more than once and made me smile at the end. Funnily enough the film I wanted before that was Elizabeth The Golden Age. which I thought was great too!

A CHUMP AT OXFORD (1940)
Laurel & Hardy

A bliss-out. What can beat hearing Stan say to Ollie: "Step over here, Fatty"?

Chump isn't the achievement that Keaton's College or Lloyd's The Freshman is, but it can stand proudly beside the Marx Brothers campus dunciad Horsefeathers.

No Country For Old Men- for the 3rd time.

Maybe my favorite movie ever!

petep9000 03-30-2008 08:29 PM

'The Hours'. The train station scene where Virginia tries to flee Richmond? The kitchen scene where Clarissa falls to pieces? The bathroom scene where Laura is in anguished psychic pain, and desperately tries to buy herself a few more minutes to pull herself together?

"I'm brushing my teeth."
"Are you coming to bed?"
(gulps down tears) "In a minute.."
