MoFi: Santana Abraxas
I made a promise if Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab ever reissued this I would tell everyone I know about it...
For any fans, this is a must have for your collection: http://www.mofi.com/productcart/pc/v...&idproduct=127 If this link doesn't work, go to www.mofi.com, click the Enter MF Webstore link, then scroll down a bit. The gold cd works real well on bass-oriented sound systems. |
I agree that this is a great album and should be in most people's collections. I've got a few of these gold CDs but with most of them I can't discern a great deal of improvement - is this really better?
On a related point. A friend of mine has an old tape (bought in Saudi about 15 years ago) of a Santana concert. It has the most incredible 15 minute version of the track 'Blues for Salvador'. Some of the improvised guitar playing is amazing even for Santana. For years I've searched for it - have you any idea what this might be from and where I could get hold of it? |
Sorry Stew, can't help you on that one. I get overwhelmed just trying to find shows from 10 years ago. :woohoo:
About the gold CDs; it's really the system and yer ears. You need a high bit rate reader and decent output (min. 400 watts, cross overs, titanium tweets, no less than 10" sub) you'll get great distinction in the highs and lows. For example; Singing Winds Crying Beasts really shines on gold. |

I have a Copland CD player and a Roksan amp both of which I bought in the UK. It is really a jazz/clasical set up but it does play some rock stuff well - Eric Clapton for example sounds very good. I'll give the Santana a try anyway cos I really like all the tracks on that album. |
I don't think you will be disappointed, but please post a review. I know what you mean about gold quality. My Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here, not a MoFi remaster, does not have spectacular fidelity, but still a great album. When I did a sound comparison between the MoFi remastered gold Abraxas and an unremastered silver, it was very noticeable. I agree with your statement about all the tracks on that album.
