Did anyone know about this?

Formed by Grill in 1966, within two years The Grass Roots had become a major American singles band, enjoying a solid chart run of 29 Top 40 singles (13 of them going gold) before they calling it quits in 1978.

Grill attempted a short-lived solo career after that, releasing his 1980 album, "Unrooted," produced by John McVie of Fleetwood Mac and featuring guest performances by McVie's band mates, Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham.

He later assembled an incarnation of The Grass Roots and recorded a "comeback" album for MCA called, "Powers Of The Night," which featured a minor radio hit titled, "She Don't Know Me."

Today, the Grass Roots are a favorite on nostalgia shows like the "Salute To The Sixties" which hits the Star Plaza Theatre stage in Merrillville this Saturday.

Yes, although we usually just talk about Gotta Band , Uprooted is listed in the discography section here as being produced by John with Mick and Lindsey and John making a guest appearance. http://discog.fleetwoodmac.net/discog.php?pid=642

I don't like the song Rock Sugar at all, really. It sounds so... I don't know what the word I'm looking for is. Low-budget maybe? Mick's drumming sounds really good, because it's got that Fleetwood Mac feel going on.. but I find the song itself to be quite boring, and the guitar parts - which I think Lindsey played - sound like crap.

It's a cool piece in the "hey check this out, did you know" type way.. but it's not something I'd voluntarily listen to more than like, 3 times in my whole life.

I didn't know it.

I am curious...

...and now....I'm gonna go hit obscure record sites to hear it.

Didn't Stevie do background on Rock Sugar?

No. It's a lady named Annie McLoone, who, to my ears, sounds like she's trying to channel Grace Slick (with less than stellar results).

I think she's the same one did vocals on Walter Egan songs that Stevie wasn't on, also.

What a stupid song!
Oy.

I like the picture of him holding a yellow dahlia. I could just picture the photographer telling his assistant "go get me a white or red rose, or the best orchid you can find" and the hapless assistant coming back with a dahlia he plucked from someone's front yard, having spent the $20 rose money on a bag of weed.

Thanks. I just watched the youtube video. That song is bad....

Maybe it comes from being a Grass Roots fan who's also proud of having the world's worst taste in music, but I rather enjoy the song. It's pretty bad, but I do find it kind of catchy. Am I the only one who would love to hear Stevie and Lindsey duet on "Two Divided By Love"?

Sarah 01-30-2008 01:52 AM

I love the Grass Roots, and I can probably rival you in "worst taste in music". This one is just a bit too budget-recording for me, though. ;)
