Quotations """"""""""""""""""""

I haven't seen a thread for quotations around here in some time...

This one has been on my mind recently whenever I'm bombarded by more news dreck about Paris, Britney, etc.:

"Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid."
(Hedy Lamar)

Anybody have other quotes on the brain?

In honor of Beethoven's birthday:
  • A great poet is the most precious jewel of a nation.
  • Rossini would have been a great composer if his teacher had spanked him enough on the backside.
  • The barriers are not erected which can say to aspiring talents and industry, “Thus far & no farther.”
  • Recommend to your children virtue; that alone can make them happy, not gold.
  • Your love makes me at once the happiest & the unhappiest of men.
  • I am resolved to wander so long away from you until I can fly to your arms & say that I am really at home with you, & can send my soul enwrapped in you into the land of spirits.
  • Then let us all do what is right, strive with all our might toward the unattainable, develop as fully as we can the gifts God has given us, & never stop learning.
  • I shall seize Fate by the throat; it shall certainly not bend and crush me completely.
  • The true artist has no pride. He sees unfortunately that art has no limits. He has a vague awareness of how far he is from reaching his goal; & while others may perhaps admire him, he laments that he has not yet reached the point to which his better genius only lights the way for him like a distant sun.

The one I saw a few months ago that's stuck with me for a while:

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
Teddy Roosevelt

It reminds me to try not to be so materialistic & to be content in my life.

"I am big - it's the pictures that got small!" Norma Desmond

"All at once and much, much too completely. It was like you suddenly turned a blinding light on something that had always been half in shadow, that's how it struck the world for me. But I was unlucky - deluded." Blanche DuBois

"It's easy to grin
When your ship comes in
And you've got the stock market beat

But a man whose worthwhile
Is a man who can smile
When his shorts aren't too tight in the seat!

-Judge Smales, President, Bushwood Country Club

Bette Davis was/is my favorite actress. Here are a couple of her quotes that always crack me up....

*I'd marry again if I found a man who had fifteen million dollars, would sign over half to me, and guarantee that he'd be dead within a year.

*The best time I ever had with Joan Crawford was when I pushed her down the stairs in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

*When a man gives his opinion he's a man. When a woman gives her opinion she's a bitch.

*An affair now and then is good for a marriage. It adds spice, stops it from getting boring... I ought to know.

* I sent my flowers across the hall to Mrs Nixon but her husband remembered what a Democrat I am and sent them back.

* Old age aint for sissies

* I'd love to kiss ya, but I just washed my hair

"Learn the difference between right and wrong. You'll probably choose wrong, but you should at least know which is which."

"Anybody who says you only have yourself to blame is just not very good at blaming other people."

"The voices in your head are not real. But they still have some really great ideas."

"The Big Three"

From the supposed "Three Giants" of Science Fiction:

Robert Heinlein:

"When any government, or church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, this you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know, the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motive"

Isaac Asimov:

"If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them."

Arthur C. Clarke:

"When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong."

That would be 'Captain Howdy', the demon from 'The Exorcist'. His face only appears in 2 or 3 split second sequences- alot of people who saw the movie only registered it as a subliminal. With the advent of VCR's and DVD's, people have learned what scenes he appears in and managed to freeze-frame to catch his horrific gaze.

To me, the split second where his face appears amount to the most horrifying images I've seen on film to date.

Thanks for noticing...sweet dreams!!!
