For Halloween: Favorite Moments from Scary Movies

Here's one of my favorite moments. Last scene in Carrie.
Spoiler, obviously.

What are some of yours?

From the Changeling. Has anyone else seen this movie? It's saw it back in the 80's and it scared the life out of me! Don't know if it would now

Halloween

Halloween has always been my favorite scary movie. This scene still makes my heart race. I recently saw the Rob Zombie remake and IMO it can't hold a candle to the original.

scares the $h*t outta me...

The beginning of the recent remake of Dawn of the Dead. Where the couple wakes up in bed and little girl attacks the husband. *shudder*

When they flash to the little girls in The Shining.

Good one, Jake!
It always makes me jump even to this day.

I think the original Omen is one that really grabbed me as a kid. More suspense than horror but that chanting music and that creepy little boy really freaked me out when I was 8.

Can I mention shaun of the dead? Not for the scariest scenes but for favourite scenes from a "scary" movie. When the guy appears in there lounge room and they yell "his arm's off!".

It's one of the greatest, most moving ghost stories ever filmed.

In the early '70s, BBC adapted Dickens's "The Signal Man." It stars Denholm Elliott.

I also think the Hoichi the Earless segment of Kobayashi's Kwaidan is freaky & chilling, as is the scene in The Innocents when Deborah Kerr sees the spectre Quint at the window.

And don't forget (or have you forgotten already?) the burial scenes in Dreyer's Vampyr.

I love scary movies that capture some of what Freud discussed in his essay on the uncanny -- images & sounds that seem to stir early memories & disrupt deep-seated psychological fissures. Some of the scariest scenes in films are those that make us think "I used to have that same nightmare as a child!"

Kira Collins, the girl vomiting, who appeared to Cole in Sixth Sense

Great Thread!

How's about these?

The Haunting (b/w version with Julie Harris, Clair Bloom)

The Other (Uta Hagen 70's - evil twin stuff)

The Changling (as has been mentioned...good psychological movie)
and the grand prize winner:

HUSH, HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE with Bette Davis

(OK, so maybe it ain't all THAT scary, but it's a good film...with some comical moments.)

(BTW...those look like the twins who were on ER last night.)

I may have been remiss in posting that those girls are the scary twins from The Shining. I think that they are musicians that reminded someone ELSE of the scary twins. I was at work when I posted the original post and didn't have time to do my research. Bad Jannie.

Here they are. (They became academics!)

Yep! The two girls you posted are Chandra and Leigh, the Watson Twins. :)

Vampyr was pretty fascinating. I take it you're also a fan of stuff like Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Carnival of Souls?

Speaking of deep-seated psychological fissures, a couple of the movies that scared the crap out of me as a kid ironically involved monsters who had no remorse about using people's trust and killing them: the daughter with the shovel in Night of the Living Dead and the aliens with the ray guns in
Mars Attacks!
. Then there was an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? on SNICK about Nosferatu haunting a theatre.
