Good Books?

I just finished reading "Are You Afraid Of The Dark?" by Sidney Sheldon...fantastic if you like mysteries...any other good reads the anyone can suggest? I tend to read darker, disconcerting stuff (Christopher Rice, Poppy Z Brite, etc) and would love to hear some suggestions...time to go SHOPPING sometime soon, I think :)

The most "gripping" book i've read this year was Lionel Shriver's We Need To Talk About Kevin. It's about a 15 year old boy who kills some fellow students and a school cafetaria worker. I'll say no more as it might spoil things, but i really recommend this book.(and it's really good stuff to be debated too)
Also just finished and liked : Eleanor Rigby by Douglas Coupland.

Celebrity Detox- Rosie O'Donnell

I read it in one sitting, and really enjoyed it. A bit of it was incoherent, but the well written parts were brilliant.

Next of Kin by Roger Fouts

Its about a chimpanzee named Washoe who learns sign language. It documents Rogers and Washoes life. What a fantastic read. Heartbreaking too!

Oh hell, I read this book a couple of years ago- one of the best written books I've ever read.

If you're into that dark odd ****, checkout or buy Insomnia by Stephen King. Great book.

I'm currently reading The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton - kinda getting into it.

Next on this list:

The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter - Carson McCullers
Go Tell it on the Mountain - James Baldwin
The Optimist's Daughter - Eudora Welty

This is a very good book, better in fact than Another Country I think. If you haven't read the set of short stories called 'Going to meet the man', they are worth checking out. I read them when I was 15/16, and I remember that the final story - the title of the book - made a lasting impression on me. It is 10 or 15 pages that everyone should read.

I'd recommend two of favourites this year –

Kazuo Ishiguro – Never Let Me Go. (Definitely unnerving and sad)
Paul Auster – Brooklyn Follies. (Pretty light but beautifully written)

I've never read much fiction, so I'm delving into the "greats," as it were. :)
I'm about halfway through The House of Mirth, and it's pretty good - I was worried at first that I'd be trudging through it, but that's not the case at all.
