I almost died of goodness when I was at the movie last night. There was so much I didn't know, so much early music I'd never heard. That band was spectacular from the get-go, and my favorite part was that, Tom Petty always seems so laid back and relaxed (when he's talking) but actually he has always known what he wanted, and never settled for less, and actively tried to make his **** the best it could be. Like, talking band members into quitting school, and taking on the record companies.
It's everything you want the story of a rock band to be, EVERYTHING. It's incredibly amazing. And Tom, while being nice, always stood his ground on what was right. Always. From the record companies to the music. Like, if you dreampt up your best rock story and your best rock guy, and the best music, and the best ideals, this is what you would come up with.
It was also so cute to hear Tom talk like Stevie does, about the same things. "Man, we were famous, and rich, and it was HEAVY!". And Tom never just said "rock band", like Stevie, he has to say "Rock and Roll". And also "****, I could smoke a joint and come up with better songs than this, why do you want him to play this sh*t?"
Seriously, best movie ever. Best music story in the world. Tom is all about, above else, the best music that can be made. And oh, my, this **** is funny as well. Tom is funny. :wavey:
And it was funny to hear all about Iovine, as well. Like "Tom, can you write a song for Stevie?" Meanwhile Tom is saying that "Jimmy was frustrated, and didn't like all of Stevie's songs, and asked me if I could..."
I also learned what a taskmaster Iovine was. I guess I could go on and on, the whole thing was fascinating.
