Dave Mason, Fleetwood Mac and Mid-Decade
 

I was just over at Costco getting my prescription for my disease, & I heard Dave Mason's "We Just Disagree." The soothing strains of this gentle love song (with a kick to it) took me back almost instantly to the mid 1990s, when Fleetwood Mac performed this song in her sets. The arrangement was very similar; drums were left out, & string synthesizer patch took the place of string orchestra.

As Dave sang about his failing love affair, I drifted back to those wonderful shows at Clear Lake Resort at Mt. Konocti, a hilly retreat spa & hotel with a splendid performance stage & venue.

A cool breeze wafted over the lake that October evening, & the marsh grass rustled & undulated slowly, as if waving to Billy Burnette & Dave Mason & John McVie as they hauled their tired butts into the lobby & out back to the water a few hours before showtime.

At intermission, I walked outside to the deck adjacent to the marina. The sailboats in the slips rocked gently, the waves on the lake lapping at the sides of their hulls, kissing them & releasing the pucker with a SMACK! Mick walked outside too. I looked up & said hello. Mick walked over & asked me how I was enjoying the show. We got to talking casually. He seemed somewhat wistful, pensive. He told me about Fleetwood Mac & about how he saw many grand eras flower & finally die. He didn't think the current configuration was going to last, although he & John were enjoying the tour. It reminded them of the early days in England.

Anyway, the song ended at Costco, & I headed out to the car. I still needed gas & a carwash, & the sky was already clouding up, portending rain later in the evening. I climbed inside, cracked the sunroof & hit PLAY on the Missa Solemnis CD, the spirits of Mick, Billy, John, Dave & Bekka growing fainter in my memory.
